Keep the T23 or get the T30? opinions?

#1 Post by Balls Co. » Tue Dec 25, 2007 10:40 pm

Hey, my first post to this forum. I've had a 770, a T21, and I now have a T23. I have loved all my thinkpads. they are the only laptops that I have ever used.
I have just won a T30 from Ebay for a good price. I thought it would be a good time for an upgrade. And I have a friend that would like to buy my T23. then I surfed the forum and saw all the memory slot problems. kinda scared me.
right now the T23 is working great. fast and reliable. but I like the integrated WiFI and 1gb of RAM with this T30.

so Im looking for an honest opinion from you all. Should I keep my T23 or sell it and upgrade to the T30 knowing about all the memory slot problems.

One more question. does the slot problem on the T30 always only affect one slot or is it sometimes both slots?

thanks for your anwsers a head of time.
and I look forward to spending some time hanging here in this forum.

I wonder the motivation and budget constraint for your potential upgrade?

YMMV. If I were in the same situation I would upgrade to T6x series and keep it for 3+ years. The duo core cpu offers IMO the biggest jump in performance in the past 5 years of intel mobile roadmap.

I was able to grab the T30 off of ebay for about $350.00
I should be able to sell my old T23 for about $300.00
Its a cheap upgrade for me, but, Like I was thinking, Im getting rid of my working machine for one that I know nothing about but what was stated in the ad.

thanks for your input.

Can you give us the exact Model/Type numbers (from the bottom of the TP, as in my signature), we could then say a bit more about your TPs.
If I had been in your position, I would have gone for a T40/41/42, mainly for the USB2.0 slots.
But I love both my T23 and T30 and have no need (but certainly a craving) to upgrade yet.
And when I do, I'll buy it off our Market forum, even though I had good experiences with TPs off eBay.

I had a t30 and loved it, no regrets there. The memory card slot is an issue but you may not have it so wait and see, that being said some have circumvented the issue with a peice of paper lodged between the chip and the ram cover to add a little pressure. Personally I'd take the T30, but that's me.

I was going to upgrade from the T22 to a T30.

Once I weighed the pros and cons;I went with a T41 and couldnt be happier.

I learned from previous experiences, considered advice I got here & made a list of all the things I wanted/needed that would be hard or expensive to upgrade to.

I arranged a buyer for the T22.

and went shopping on Ebay with a reputable seller.

To me;someone who likes the T2X series; the T4x series is the best trade up............

the T30 I was talking about in the earlier posts came tonight. Ive been surfing on it and it seems pretty clean. looks like the machine was pretty lightly used. I ran Belarc advisor on it and this was some of the specs.

IBM 2366-51U (on the bottom of the laptop)
System Serial Number: 78Dxxxx <-- Mod edit: removed S/N
Board: IBM 236651U

1.80 gigahertz Intel Mobile Pentium 4 - M
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Serial Number: J1PA32AS17B
Bus Clock: 400 megahertz
BIOS: IBM 1IET71WW (2.10 ) 06/16/2006

1024 Megabytes Installed Memory
Slot 'DIMM 1' has 512 MB
Slot 'DIMM 2' has 512 MB

38.75 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
33.38 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

the guy threw in a windows XP home disk to boot. that makes me kinda happy. also looks like all of the RAM is working. anyone have any ideas if this one is a keeper or should I try to get rid of her and keep my little tank of a T23.

thanks again for any input.

Your "new" T30 is a fairly rare bird with SXGA+ (1400x1050) screen resolution, while your T23 is a regular XGA (1024x768) machine.

That fact alone would make me keep the T30.

Also, given that both of DIMM slots are apparently good on your T30, you can drive it up to 2Gb RAM. Add a nice 7200rpm HDD and you're all set.

Most of your T23 will be lost in paying for these upgrades, but it would be money well spent IMO.

After surfing on this T30 for an hour or so, I do notice the weight difference. its amazing what a lil extra weight feels like with these laptops. plus the cooling fan is a lot noisier than the T23.

My t23 feels faster, but i think a lot of that is from my own system tweaking that I havent done on this T30 yet.

I like the page forward and back buttons by the arrow keys. already started using them.

Im not making a verdit yet, but I might just stick with the T23 and sell this baby back on Ebay, or maybe here is the market place.

Ill have to check out how to do that.

Indeed. My experience is that a difference larger than 0.5 lb is very obvious, for example my 3.84-lb X61 tablet and 3.16-lb HP nc2400 feel very different.

As far as the memory slot problem....... (if it presents itself) how handy are you with a soldering iron, the pencil type?

after a couple of days of working on the T30, Ive decided to keep the T23. the T30 isnt a bad machine, just doesnt seem like much of an upgrade for me. Plus there are a few lil things I dont like with the T30. Mainly, its a lil heavier, the fan is a lil noisier, and Its not as thin and sleek as my T23. Plus, my T23 feels faster and snappier than the T30 and it has twice the RAM. Of course a lil tweaking with the T30 could get it running snappy also.
anyways, Im sticking with trusty ole T23 for now.
Thanks for everyones input.
