How fast is YOUR wireless B? (Pic)

#1 Post by Cuda » Sat Dec 29, 2007 9:37 am

Just wondering if I'm getting normal speeds fom my wireless B router, it's an old Linksys B model. According to several different speedtests I get right at 7Mbps out of my ADSL modem to my hardwired desktop, my T23 says it's connected at 11 Mbps but the speedtest results are about 5 Mbps from 2ft out to 30ft away. Is that about right or should I get faster speeds? My T23 has factory built in wireless. Here is the results from my T23...

That is probably about right, and in line with what I see on various wireless connections. Wired connections are vastly faster than wireless, even over an internal network. Whenever I have to do heavy duty internal copies or heavy duty remote applications, I switch my laptop to wired. ... JDH

My 600e with G card and G router results are 787kbps to San Jose, Ca and 747kbps to Austin, TX. Tests were done 3 times to each.

What the heck!!!??? Is there other testing websites?

I don't think wired vs. wireless has a thing to do with download/upload speeds to the net, that is if your wireless connection is working properly. I see no difference here on wired vs. wireless.

I was just checking wireless, but OP still got 5mbps while I didn't get 1Mbps?? I have a T21 that will be the closest to his setup to test. I am checking my wireless driver in the next few moments.

Using Wireless B, and on large downloads, wired is faster for me than wireless, and that is consistent with my other local speed tests. Wireless G may be better. ... JDH

That's pretty much what "b" will give you on most routers. A "g" card would give you up to 54Mbps, which is still only half the speed of a proper 10/100 LAN connection.

I never download any big files via wireless...just my $0.02

Wired -

Note: A couple of you mentioned local download speed (over a local LAN), that's not what the OP is discussing. This is strictly Internet download speed. The bottleneck on a 11Mbps WiFi connection to a 5MB down Internet connection is NOT the wireless adapter speed. If we were talking about a 15Mbps down FIOS link, this would be a different discussion. It would also be a different discussion if we were talking about downloading a file from another local machine on a 100Mbps LAN to a Thinkpad with an 802.11b adapter vs. an 802.11g adapter. It sounds to me like the OP has a problem with that particular adapter or his router. I bet if he ran traceroute tests to the same server that he is experiencing slow speeds from he'd see a bunch of lost packets and retransmissions. The speeds should be the similar wired vs. wireless. The reasons why they may not be similar - router, WiFi adapter, local interference, wiring between the router and modem, distance between the router and the adapter, ...

RealBlackStuff, at the results page for the speedtest.net test, there is a copy button next to forum link. Click on it. Come back here and just paste the link into a post. Done.

I get 4832 down and 504 up with Speedtest.net and with my wireless B card. Rogers and Bell are competing heavily in Toronto for business and both are raising their speeds (great for consumers). ... JDH

I think I have issues with my T23, internal wifi using Verizon DSL.

Any suggestions?

T23 wired via SBC/Yahoo! DSL

Same T23 using Netgear 802.11b connection (sorry for the time delay between tests, but it's 2008 now!) I should also explain that I'm at the far end of an ADSL connection, ~15000' and thus am only "qualified" for 384Kbps but I usually get 1Mbps; still much slower than the wireless link anyway.

Sorta OT, but I would like to see if there's any difference between speedtest.net (the top images in each pair) and dslreports.com (bottom image) from the others who have posted here. I've used DSLR ever since I got broadband and they seem to be more consistent with their measurements than any other site. Their test site is at:

Vanaya, your internet connection definitely has issues. What kind of performance do you get hardwired? If it's the same you need to have a serious discussion with Comcast tech support.
Go to http://www.dslreports.com/tools and run some of their tests particularly the line quality test.

I have used and strongly recommend the utility TCP Optimizer, ( http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php ) to tune my internet connection for maximum performance. The results have often been a dramatic increase in performance. This utility will work for Windows XP but will have have no effect on Vista (sigh).
