DVD burner won't burn
Has anyone seen this. The burner is recognized in explorer as a DVD Ram under it's appropriate name but when a blank disk is put in it changes to a CD drive and I can't access it. It will read any disk (movie, data, music, whatever) under the DVD name but changes to the CD drive and won't write and comes up with not accessable incorrect function. I did everything I could think of to resolve it all the way up to replacing the drive with a different brand and the same problem. This machine has been working under it's current configuration with no problems.
Any help is much appreciated

I have never been able to burn anything using windows burner/explorer with DVD drives. See if you can run a trial of Nero Burning Suite, and if it work, then it will not be the hardware. I don't know if there is a fix for this, but like I sad; I've never had luck "dragging and dropping" files onto a blank DVD within windows.

Under the "Recording" tab of the properties of that drive, the box to "Enable recording on this drive" must be checked.
Also check that DMA is enabled.
You could try a (freeware) burning program like from http://cdburnerxp.se/ and disable the XP built-in crapware.

DVD burner won't burn
I forgot to mention that I use Nero. It doesn't want to burn with any program I have. It's just weird how when a blank disk is put into it it changes from a DVD to a CD in explorer. Yet it remains a DVD in Device manager. And I have two burners and they both do it. Also have a DVD player and they all read fine in the same bay. I put the machine in the dock and the drives in the dock slot and the same. Seems as though there is some kind of communication problem. Just my guess. Hoping someone will have a good idea.

Quite often it helps if you uninstall the drive in Device Manager, then upon reboot it will find new hardware and re-install the drivers again.
It also helps if you apply this Regedit change, deleting the upper limit and lower limit as described by 'John Will' in this post.

DVD won't burn
One of the first things I did was uninstall iTunes. I read where it caused problems. I went back through all the instructions and deleted what I could find. There has to be a driver or something causing this. The machine sees the drive only as a CD rom and it will burn to CD's. It treats DVD's like they are CD's. I didn't know it would actually burn to CD's as I haven't used any in a long time. Dug one up and tried it and it burn to it. So there is something in software I think. I did try uninstalling the drive as well and the same thing.
