spilled coffee in Ultra bay upper right corner T23?

#1 Post by djtopcat » Wed Jan 16, 2008 1:18 am

Hi guys I recently posted about my T23 only getting a black screen on bootup. Based on replies I took it apart and did find a loose inductor coil which I resoldered to the mb but still black screen
one mod suggested that if I was doing the bios update while the coil was loose I basically will need a new mainboard period
but here's some new info I wasn't aware of. Apparently my roomate who I bought this off at one time spilled coffee in the upper right corner of the Ultra bay when I had the machine apart the very right hand corner of I'm guessing the LCD board under the display was brown and corroded looking I cleaned it up with some rubbing alcohol but I'm wondering now if that could be the problem with the black screen? maybe something got shorted out even though it was working long after the spill? can some expert tell me exactly what is located on the far right corner of the lcd board?
thanks

If you are referring to a long, thin circuit board located between the bottom edge of the LCD panel and the back edge of the keyboard, then that is the inverter. The job of the inverter is to supply the very large voltage (and small current) needed to fire up the backlight. The far right edge of the inverter will have a small white socket. There will be a plug that is inserted into it that goes to the bottom right corner of the LCD panel. That's the wires to the backlight. A bad inverter will display the symptoms you report; no light from the screen. However, you should still be able to see an image if you shine a bright light down at an angle onto the screen (assuming everything else is working properly). With at least one stick of memory and no hard drive, power up the system and press the F1 key a couple of times. That should force the system into the BIOS screen. Take a bright flashlight and shine it on the screen. If you can see a whitish background with light blue lettering, then your LCD panel is displaying the video signal provided by the motherboard and you probably have a dead inverter. They can be found fairly easily on eBay for $10-$15; $20 if you are in a hurry.
