Hard Drive/Ultrabay Recommendation
Hard Drive/Ultrabay Recommendation
I am looking to upgrade the 40g hard drive in my T30 to a drive of 100g or more. Does anyone have a drive they recommend including the model#? I am planning to use an ultrabay adapter to set up the new drive and then put the large drive in the T30 and use the 40g in the ultrabay to backup some data. Which ultrabay adapter will work with these drives in my T30?

Hitachi 7K100 is the preferred disk around here, 100GB at 7200rpm.
This is the Ultrabay adapter you need.

Thank you very much for the information. On NEWEGG.COM they show 2 Hitachi 7K100 drives. One is ATA-6 and the other is ATA150. http://tinyurl.com/yq4ubb. Do you know which one will work with my T30?RealBlackStuff wrote:Hitachi 7K100 is the preferred disk around here, 100GB at 7200rpm.

You need the ATA-6 (also known as PATA, Parallel ATA) version. The other one is a SATA (Serial ATA) drive and will not fit in your T30.

I bought this Ultrabay adapter and now need to put my hard drive in it. Which side of the hard drive should be facing up when it goes into the adapter?RealBlackStuff wrote:Hitachi 7K100 is the preferred disk around here, 100GB at 7200rpm.

The side with the label on it goes tops. The electronics are at the bottom.

I got my hard drive in the mail today and have one more question. I am going to put the new 100gb drive in the Ultrabay adapter and clone my 40gb drive to it. Do I need to put a piece of plastic under the hard drive when I put it in the Ultrabay adapter?RealBlackStuff wrote:The side with the label on it goes tops. The electronics are at the bottom.

Interesting you ask this...
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 481#384481
As most laptop hard drives have exposed circuit boards on the bottom AND the IBM Ultrabay hard drive adapter is metal, I use a piece of plastic film when inserting a bare drive into the Ultrabay adapter; i.e., one which does not have the regular hard drive caddy installed. While there is probably only a 0.01% chance of the metal tray touching anything on the bottom of the drive, having a piece of non-conductive mylar insures that chance is reduced to zero.

Greetings.
I have two Win XP notebooks (NBs) (1 w/ XPH & 1 w/ XPP).
The XPP NB is an IBM T30 with a 40gb 9.5mm 2.5" PATA HDD.
I also have an ancient Toshiba 4005cds Satellite NB
with a 4.1gb HDD and WinME.
I might source a 250gb WD2500BEVE 9.5mm 2.5" PATA HDD.
I would put 3 (NTFS) partitions on the 250gb HDD & install my
current XPP OS/Program partition on the 250gb bootpartition
via cloned images. I use DriveImage XML.
I am wondering about then putting the 40gb HDD to use by -
1) creating two partitions on the 40gb HDD;
1) formatting the 40gb HDD bootpartition as FAT32;
3) installing/transferring WinME onto the 40gb bootpartition;
4) using the 2nd 40gb partition as a portable backup
for the XP NBs by using the UltraBay 2000; and
5) using the 40gb internally in the Toshiba 4005cds
when I am "at home" and have all three NBs at my disposal.
A) I WOULD LIKE TO CONFIRM (IF POSSIBLE)
THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO USE THE 40GB HDD
IN THE TOSHIBA SATELLITE 4005CDS.
The following »
www.softwareforless.com/indspecs.asp?partid=682569
claims its HDD is compatible with the 4005cds.
It seems the HDD dimensions (when converted to metric)
seem to match the 40gb HDD dimentions.
B) HOW SHOULD I FORMAT THE 2ND 40GB HDD PARTITION?
WinME can read/write from/to my NTFS HDDs when networked;
The 40gb HDD bootpartition would have to be FAT32
to have the WinME installed on it, correct?
Could I format the 2nd 40gb partition as NTFS?
The WinME 4005 could still read & write to the NTFS partition?
Any insights appreciated.
Thank you.

Greetings.
I am still hoping for some/any insights.
I have not yet ordered any HDD.
Anyone have experience with a 250gb HDD
as the main T30 HDD?
I believe I have the latest BIOS.
Any reason a 250gb HDD would not work?
It seems the 40gb HDD would fit in the Toshiba 4005.
What complications would there be if I simply
put the 40gb HDD in the Toshiba
and booted the WinXP that
had been in the T30?
Would XP identify the new/necessary drivers & etc?
Any insights appreciated.
Thank you.

T30 will work with a 250Gb HDD, and WD is the one to go with.
As for the ultrabay drive, are you going to use it for extra storage, load a different OS or what?

Greetings.
As a preliminary step, I removed the 40gb HDD
from the T30 & the 4gb HDD from the Toshiba.
The OEMs screwed some of the HDD caddy screws
so tightly I almost couldn't loosen/remove some of the screws.
In any case, the 40gb HDD would not boot
once inside the Toshiba.
I then booted my BartPE CD, and the 40gb HDD
was there & fully functioning.
I changed the HDD BIOD setting from Advanced IDE
to Standard, but the HDD still would not boot.
I returned the HDDs to the original laptops.
The 4gb would not boot until I changed
BIOS setting back to Advanced IDE.
I updated the Toshiba BIOS in Autumn 2007.
I have no experience with swapping 2.5" HDDs.
I would appreciate if anyone with knowledge/experience
could/would advise what I need to do
so I could use the 40gb HDD in the Toshiba
(with either WinME or WinXP).
I am on the road more than 50% of each year,
so I would use the 40gb HDD in the UltraBay
when on the road without the Toshiba.
Even though I have two laptops with WinXP,
I do not have a proper WinXP install CD.
I only have one OEM WinXP CD.
In any case, any insights appreciated.
Thank you.

My latest hope for helpful feedback »
At first I simply removed the 40gb (with XP)
from the T30 and inserted it
in the Toshiba Satellite 4005cds
that has a 4gb HDD with WinME.
In any case after entering the CMOS password,
the screen went black (like normal) however
with an unblinking cursor in the upper left corner.
I have now used Drive Image XML to image/backup
the c:\ partitions on the T30 & 4005.
I then restored the 4005 WinME image to the c:\
of the T30 40gb HDD. This time after entering
the CMOS password the 4005 said,
"Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key."
The BIOS has two HDD options:
Standard IDE & Enhanced IDE.
Standard IDE does not allow the 4gb WinME
(nor the 40gb WinME) to boot.
Enhanced allows the 4gb WinME to boot.
It seems to me the 40gb SHOULD function
in the Toshiba. Vendors hawk 40gb PATA HDDs
for the Toshiba Satellite 4005cds.
I now have no idea how I might manage
to have the 40gb function in the 4005.
I have the latest BIOS 8.20
(which is not very modern).
Both times when I booted my BartPE CD,
the HDD was there (1° as NTFS/XP then FAT32/WinME)
and functioned just fine under BartPE.
How might I manage to have
the 40gb function in the 4005?
I wonder if whatever replacement T30 HDD
I eventually source will boot in the T30?
If I cannot use the 40gb in the 4005,
then I would use the 40gb in the T30
with Utrabay & buy a replacement HDD
smaller than the maximum 250gb HDD.
I'm not going to have a superfluous
512mb RAM module & a superfluous 40gb HDD.
Any insights appreciated.
Thank you.

Greetings.
I ordered/received the 250gb WD HDD.
Despite obstacles (see below),
I can say now that I make this posting
with the newly booted 250gb WD HDD.
This 250gb HDD runs QUIETLY.
The original 40gb HDD was NOISY.
First I booted PartedMagic (PM) under UBCD4W;
however, PM reported "kernel panic" & froze.
This of course gave me some panic.
I decided to remove & re-insert the HDD.
Mercifully PM booted this time.
I created the three partitions.
I restored the XP c image file from
the 40gb HDD and tried to boot.
No dice ...
I then reviewed the FAQs for DIxml and
determined I need to verify if the newly
imaged c partition was ACTIVE under XP.
I booted the UBCD4W & then loaded
Computer Management.
Sure enought the c partition was NOT active.
After setting the c partition to active,
the new 250gb HDD with XP imaged
on to it from my original 40gb HDD booted ...
That left me to try boot the 40gb HDD
instead of the 4gb HDD in the Toshiba.
Anyone interested in that story
can find my posting at the PCWorld forum ...
I recount my experience here in case
it helps anyone in future ... even though
I received no insights from anyone
about this specific challenge ...
Thank you.
