I have had for more than one year a second hand T30 which now I'd like to upgrade, as it's slowness became unacceptable running winxp.
First of all I looked for more ram, since it seemed to have just 256mb. Actually it mounted 2 256mb banks, but one slot is faulty as the so well-known t30 problem.
However, testing the system with CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) there's something strange:
the frequency reported is 133 and not 266 as it should be.Chipset & Memory
Northbridge Intel i845D rev. 04
Southbridge Intel 82801CAM (ICH3-M) rev. 02
Graphic Interface AGP
AGP Revision 2.0
AGP Transfer Rate 4x
AGP Side Band Addressing supported, enabled
Memory Type DDR
Memory Size 256 MBytes
Memory Frequency 133.2 MHz (3:4)
CAS# Latency (tCL) 2.5 clocks
RAS# to CAS# (tRCD) 3 clocks
RAS# Precharge (tRP) 3 clocks
Cycle Time (tRAS) 6 clocks
I ask you if this datum is reliable and then my ram is really working "underclocked", or, more hopefully, if it could be a bug of the software.
I always thought it was the second case, but what made me doubt again is that I tried to mount in the working slot a bank of 512mb pc3200 (ddr400, which should be backward compatible until ddr266 at least... please correct me if I'm wrong), but the system didn't boot. Now, what I fear is that the "working" slot might be faulty as well in the sense that works at half frequency....
I precise that the not working slot is the one close to the case border, while the one I'm asking about is the internal one.
So, my questions are:
- could a slot work at half frequency?
- could I mount pc3200 ram on this chipset (assuming the slot works)?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
