Great Hitachi 7200rpm Hard Drive!

#1 Post by dmata10 » Sat Feb 09, 2008 10:51 pm

I kept heaaring how great 7200rpm hard drives were so I decided to go ahead and get a new one from Tiger Direct (Item# H450-5044 SY $79.99) and it turned out to be the best decsion I have made yet for my old reliable T-23.

I have 80 gigs to play with, not to mention faster speed all the way around. When I pulled out the original hard drive that came with the laptop, it was 20gb at 4200rpm. I never knew I was playing with something that slow. So putting in the Hitachi opened up a whole new world of speed.

Should you have the means to pick up a new hard drive, I would highly reccomend picking up this little speed demon.

As I put more items on the other 2 partitions that I made on the HD, I will let you know how things are going and if I have any problems.

I second that. I think it is the best investment you can make. I had a cherry 600e with a 7K100. It was a great little machine.

i'm with you on this one too. I put the 60gig 7200 drive in my t30 and it made a big difference, so much i ordered another for my brothers T23. It made everything run faster, better than dealing with the extra fan and heat from a faster CPU.

Ditto for me on the Hitachi drive. But, I also did the CPU & fan upgrade. It wasn't that hard and the 25% speed boost made another big difference.

So what is the largest CPU and fan that I can put into my T-23?

The largest CPU is the PIII 1.2GHz, though there is supposedly an almost impossible to find 1.3GHz out there....but, no one on here has confirmed it.

The fan remains the same...

My TP is a T-21, so the max CPU was a 1GHz SL53S with a T-22 heatsink/fan. Your T-23 is different. Stock was an 800MHz CPU.

You must have gotten lucky. I searched for the part number you posted and it states item is no longer available. I've beeen trying to find a 7200 rpm drive, (Seagate or Hitachi) with no luck. Everyone is out of the 7200 in PATA, only have 5400rpm available. I put Seagate 7200's in both my T23 and my x31. Wanted to get one for my T30, but no luck as of yet. The 7200's really wake up the system's performance. Enjoy your drive, I think it may be one of the last ones that were available!

I've upgraded the CPU in my R61e from a 540 to T7300, upgraded memory from 512MB to 2GB and am interested in upgrading the HDD from a 5400RPM to 7200RPM drive. My only question is will I see any discernible difference in performance from this upgrade. The other two yielded great results but I am not so sure an HDD upgrade from 5400 to 7200 will have much effect. Anyone have experience with this?

At one time, I upgraded a T30 from a 5400rpm drive to a 7200rpm drive and the difference was instantly noticeable. Just perkier in general. I have the same drive in my T41 now and I like the increased speed very much. ... JDH

No longer available at NewEgg.com. However, it appears that the larger 7K200 HDD is the latest replacement for 7K100. 7K100 is still available in 60GB...

I checked Dealtime as Nikki suggested above, and pcmall. Dealtime says out of stock, PCMall says call for shipping dates, which means they do not have them in stock. I will keep looking though, as I would really like to get my T30 up to 7200rpm.

Thanks

Start making some posts in your local craigslist..

You'd be surprised what people have "lying around" and are not using that they are happy to sell for a few quick bucks..

I made a post one time about a year ago, looking for a 21" CRT to upgrade from a 17" I was using.. In the ad I stated that I "barely had any cash to play with, so give me your prices." guy gives me an email says he has two I can have for 10$ a piece. I go to get them and I instantly notice.. These aren't 21" CRT's.. They're 24"!!
:o

I was running dual Sony P1690 CRt's on my desk for a long time..

Anyway, sorry for the tangent, just saying.. You can get a good deal on that site, if your careful and pick and choose accordingly.

Thanks for the thread. I ordered a Hitachi Travelstar 7200RPM HDD with 16MB cache and a little Apricorn external enclosure. I know the R61e is SATA 3.0 but I'd rather have the 16MB of cache than the theoretical 300MBs transfer speed that never gets past about 110MBs. The Egg didn't have a SATA 3.0 with 16MB cache.

Thanks to this post I bought a 7200 RPM HDD. As I saiud it is a SATA 150 but it has 16MB cache. I used HD Clone to copy my 5400RPM HDD. All I can say is I am incredibly impressed with the performance increase. I expected a very small speed up but it is more akin to going from 256MB of RAM to 1GB. Absolutely knocked me off my seat.

I am an experienced builder but would never have suspected that going from a 5400RPM to a 7200 RPM would have such a profound effect on performance. I think the 16MB of cache is a big player in this as well.

The Apricorn external enclosure is outstanding as well. As with all of Apricorn's products it is extremely well made but this thing can take SATA and PATA and is very easy to load a drive in. Slide a switch and the tray pops out.

All in all a great experience and money well spent. The Apricorn comes with some clone software but I trust my HD Clone so used that. Great enclosure available here http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a ... 6817155602 if anyone is interested.

Thanks for talking me into this upgrade and to anyone thinking about it all I can say is go for it. Just get a 16MB cache drive. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a ... 6822145181

The T-30 has an IDE (PATA) spec and will not work with an SATA drive, The Hitachi 7K100 will interface with it but there appears to be a form factor issue you must research as per below:

* Supported HDD thickness:
o 12.5 mm for systems without the touch pad
o 9.5mm for systems with the touch pad
* Standard 20GB, 40GB, 60GB HDD sizes.
Note:
o The 60GB HDD orderable as marketing option part number 08K9688 has a height of 12.5mm and will not fit in the HDD slot of the systems with the touch pad installed. For these systems, it is only supported via the ThinkPad 2nd HDD Adapter for the Ultrabay 2000.
o The 60GB HDD orderable as replacement service part number 08K9833 is 9.5mm.
* Supports one additional HDD which can be used concurrently to offer expanded storage utilizing the Ultrabay 2000
* S.M.A.R.T technology to issue an alert if a hardware failure is pending
* ATA Bus Interface
* 4200 or 5400 rpm
* Although you can upgrade the HDD, it is not designed to be removed and reinserted on a regular basis. Repeated and frequent removal, for purposes other than to upgrade for greater capacity, can cause damage to the system. The Ultrabay 2000 HDD adapter is designed to provide this flexibility with a second HDD in the Ultrabay 2000

I myself have just reaped the benefits of a Hitachi 7200 HDD, thanks to a deal with aaa. All I can say is.....IMPRESSIVE No hard data to back it up, but when I did a clean restore from the recovery disks, the screen scrolled so fast it was unbelievable. Overall performance for a T23 is best described as "snappy". Well worth the upgrade and investment.

I bought one from them a couple weeks ago through Amazon. It was the only place that I could find that had them in stock. It was delivered quickly and I used the Acronis software to copy my old drive to the new drive and then expanded the partition to use all of the new drive. It works great in my T30. My next project is to upgrade my wifi card from the Cisco Aironet B card that is in it now. I am trying to decide between the Intel card and Atheros.

It's good to see that everyone is happy with their 7200rpm drives, but I do have one question which is: Do you notice any increase heat output from your laptops?
thanks

Not on mine. (T23) And can barely hear it run. Maybe that's just because it's new though.

I had a 40g 5400rpm Hitachi in it before and I notice no difference in the amount of heat coming out of it. The new drive is quieter, I can barely hear it.

Hey, thanks for the link, marditti. I just ordered one myself, after searching for a few days before I found this forum entry.

There's also a couple of 100GB Hitachi 7200 PATA's on ebay, with prices that seem reasonable ($120 vicinity) for anyone who needs something larger.
Authentic Bill Morrow 770Z, near-mint, and an A31 (2652-P3U) that I just got.
