T30: switching ON problem (not memory slots)

#1 Post by PriMus » Mon Mar 03, 2008 1:20 pm

Hi all,

I hope there is someone here to help me out. So, I've got T30 (2366-83U) and the problem is that it doesn't turn on after pressing the "POWER" once. I have to press several times (sometimes 10-20) to turn it ON. After that it's running fine with no problems whatsoever.
There is no problem with turning the laptop OFF, - so I figure it's not the keyboard. another strange thing is that the "power" button work perfectly fine when the PC is hibernating - one push and it's up. Following up some advices from this forum I re-soldered two RAM slot contacts and all the inductors on the MOBO, - didn't help.

What can it be? Maybe some there is a "bad" capacitor somewhere?

thanks, Igor

The only theory I have is that a component is requiring a 'warm up' period when you originally turn on your PC. You should try pressing the power button once or twice and see if it turns itself on after a short while regardless of the number of times you press the button. Does your laptop do the same on battery and plugged in? Also, you should try booting your computer, running it for about half an hour, and then doing a full shutdown. As soon as it has fully powered off, restart it. Does this cause any change (more/fewer than average 'presses' to power on, and possibly a faster boot?)

I'm away from home for a while. As soon as I get back, -I'll check the different scenarios and report that. :D
As far as I remember there was no difference whether it's battery powered or AC. One thing is for sure, when I press power button in very quick and snappy motion it may power up faster (like 5 pressing 5 times instead of 15).

Okay, strange. I will keep checking in to see if you've made any progress. BTW, my name is Truk (yes, it's my real name, not a nickname), with no 'C'. People seem to like to spell it wrong...

Truk, sorry for misspelling your name. I guess it was too late when I posted the message here or/and I was a mess.
Anyways, I tried to start my T30 with AC adapter unplugged.
It starts pretty well - usually one or two attempts MAX. It usually gets a little bit worse when I plug in AC adapter. After ~30 min of running time - the situation is still the same. What is killing me that it takes only one push on the button to bring the PC up from hibernating.
Oh well, strange ... - maybe I should just accept that.

ps. So far, I've replaced CCFL back light lamp and inverter, re-soldered memory slot contacts and almost all inductors on the MOBO.
Now it takes less than 5 "presses" to bring it up after a total shutdown. Weird ... There should be something very simple ... somewhere

Yes, actually I would assume it's a slightly loose solder joint. You might be able to fix it by replacing the power board (the board that sits behind the motherboard and has the power jack in it.) Still, it might be a problem in the motherboard. If I were you, I'd just leave it unless it gets worse.

Try to reset it by unplugging it and removing the battery. Pust the power button several times (about 10) holding it for 5 seconds the last time. This has worked for me a couple of times before. I couldn't locate original thread.

If I understand you correctly; after using this technique the symptoms returned. :( Can you remember the interval between them?

Hi, Maybe pm this rocket science level moderator I copied below and he can be more technical. I do remember once having to do it many more than 10 times though. Pete

PS> Primus: your symptoms match mine exactly and we have exact same model!

Disconnect AC power and remove the X31 from it's dock. Remove the battery. Press the power button 5 to 10 times, holding it down for a couple of seconds each time. Reinstall the battery, power up.

One of the "normal" solutions is to pull all sources of power, main battery, CMOS backup battery and AC and leave it like that for a couple of days before trying to power it up again. Sometimes this works. I have a T21 and T22 with this problem and have been attempting to work on them from time to time. The T21 has never powered up the couple of weeks I've had it. The T22 has come to life several times in the 5 or so months it's been in my hands. The other thing that I've heard "works" is removing power, pushing the power button many times (20-30) and then holding it for 20-30 seconds.

- unplug system and remove battery

- press the power button ten times repeatedly

- then hold down the power button for 25 seconds in order to completely discharge the capacitors, etc.

Try plugging in the AC power and attempt to boot. If nothing happens, then repeat the process but run off of the battery instead (no AC adapter).
