Dial Up Network [DUN] password not "saved" on T-21

#1 Post by oldbob » Wed Mar 05, 2008 3:21 pm

My T-21 Thinkpad laptop is running Win98SE. When I setup an ISP phone number and click on the "save password" box, the next time I click on the icon the password is missing !!!

I have to retype the password every time I go online. Any suggestions ???

NOTE: I have my desktop setup the same way, and there the password is always shown.

Are you logging in as "Administrator" or as a "User"?

If I remember correctly back to the Win 98 days that means the file where all your passwords are stored is corrupt. If you delete it Windows will recreate it (without any stored passwords) and it should work then.

I think it has a .pwl extension but I could be wrong about that. Try the MS Knowledge Base - there used to be an article in there that explained it all.

Here is the link to the MS KB article that talks about the password not being saved and how to fix it.

Thanks for responses,

I will try deleting/rebuilding password file.

I suspect the copy of Win98SE on my Thinkpad is getting a little "funky", because, when I boot up I sometimes get an "improper shutdown" message [and scandisk is run] even though shut down "appears" normal.

Will post results.

Like yours, my T-21 originally shipped with Win 98 in 2001. That's why, when in 2004 my HDD started going bad, I decided to upgrade to XP when I installed the new, bigger, faster HDD. That turned out to be a great decision. Win XP is so much more stable than Win 98SE.

Back in business again.

Went into Windows Explorer and deleted password folder, on reboot I recreated my DUN icons and everything is working again. Sometimes, my 76 year old brain needs a kick-start to get going.

Thanks for your help.

nikki..... I bought Thinkpad about three years ago just to "dual-boot" Linux. I like Win98SE because I don't need anybody's "permission" to remove and install it.
