Available wireless networks (T30)

#1 Post by FragrantHead » Sun Mar 23, 2008 3:56 pm

I have a T30 with High Rate Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter with Modem II. In order to connect to a wireless access point you need to enter the network name (SSID). This is a real pain at airports where you know a wireless network may be there, but there is no information about the SSID readily available. I've seen other laptops show a list of available networks, but my driver / software doesn't. I am using the latest firmware and driver from Lenovo for this adapter. Is there any software that allows listing the available networks?

If you use linux, the best is airodump.

NetStumbler does not work with all wireless cards. Also, according to the FAQ, if the SSID is not being broadcast, the program will not be able to see it. I would think that if the wireless system is free (no hourly fees or subscription plans needed), then the SSID will be "in the clear". If it's closed, then there's probably a good chance that you will need to pay for access. There's hand-held receivers which can display nearby access point settings (SSID, channel, encryption status) as well.

Windows or the wireless utility program controlling your Wifi card should display the SSID of the access points in your area.

The information Ray has provided about Netstumbler and SSID's is by and large true. With respect to the T30, however, I did have one with that high-rate card, and Netstumbler did work with it. It is worth a try. ... JDH
