Power-on Error Beeps?

#1 Post by newyorkpaulie » Fri Mar 28, 2008 2:57 pm

1-beep, 3-beeps, 3-beeps & 1-beep.
Anyone know what this indicates?
Screen stays black.... hard drive spins... but nothing more.
Thanks.

Missing, or bad, memory. Beep code explanations are available from the Hardware Maintenance Manual:

Yes, I see it could be either DIMM or System Board. The memory is fine. It came right out of my other PC which is also a T23, so it must be motherboard trouble. Do you think? Thanks for your help.

If you have independently verified that the memory is operating properly in another system, then the problem exists on that motherboard. It could have the "bad memory slot" problem common on T30s and which bit me on a T23 a month ago.

Well, here's a hot one! I just tried the PC again and it's fine. It was delivered to me this afternoon by UPS and was on the cold side I noticed when I took it out of the box. Once it warmed up it worked fine. Who would guess? Bottom line is I am now a happy camper.

Well, if the memory modules were also in the system (and cold), then you still could have a problem with the module(s):

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 073#349073

Cold temperature is normally not a worse-case condition for DRAM; high temperatures are. When hot, the memory access times slow down and the refresh time becomes shorter. That first item can result in "bad" data and the second item usually isn't a problem since the motherboard should be generating the proper refresh cycles and the memory would have to be greatly out-of-spec to fail for refresh.
