T23 Memory Upgrade
T23 Memory Upgrade
I recently got a good deal on a T23, which only had 128MB of memory. I purchased an aditional 512MB for a total of 640MB which has sped things up quite a bit. My question is this...would replacing the remaining 128MB stick with another 512MB stick for a total of 1GB yeild a noticible difference over the 640?
It depends a lot on what you are doing. In general though Windows XP runs very smooth with 1GB of RAM.
Something you can do to judge is look at your RAM usage when doing your normal tasks. I have a T23 with a very slimmed down version of XP that I use pretty much just for web browsing with 512MB, and it works fine for that. If you notice all of the RAM being used and a lot of hard drive usage then you need more. Otherwise you will probably not notice any difference.

Hi,
I've upgraded my 512 MB X31 to 1 GB rapidly, and, yes, I can feel a little difference. It's more reactive when I load applications, and when i'm using several ones.
Like ErikD, I've slimmed down my Windows XP and It won't take more than 85-90 MB when it loads (I count the two or three softwares that start at the same time - NOD32, Taskswitch, Taskix, and SuperCleaner).
1 GB can be useful if you're the kind of guy to load a lot of softwares at the same time, but if you only use one application at the time, it will not be very useful.
As the applications I use don't need virtual memory, I have deactivated it.
With a lot of memory, and some little tweaks, it can speed up your machine a little.

I always recommend maxing out the RAM, especially on a nice and understated machine like T23. Smoothness that comes with 1Gb RAM is quite noticeable in my opinion.
However, putting in a fast HDD, preferably 7200rpm, may be the more important priority, especially for the fact that these are getting to be hard to find.
Just my $0.02...

A good drive is very important, but when you see the performances of the 5400 rpm HDD nowadays, I don't think it's necessary to go 7200.
My 5400 HDDs in my T23 and X31 have almost the same performances. Not worth the price, IMHO.
Look at my X31's Samsung Spinpoint M5 80 GB HDTach :

And an HDTach of a Hitachi 7K100 80 GB :

Results are quite similar...
