T30 won't recognize Hard Drive

#1 Post by lessthanhadley » Fri Apr 04, 2008 10:19 am

I am looking at a T30 for a friend of mine which had a dead hard drive. Since I removed that hard drive I have tried putting in 3 different drives that I know work from connecting them to other computers and also tried reconnecting the broken hard drive. In any case, the drive is not recognized by the computer. The same drives are all recognized when I put them into my T42 but not by the T30. I tried using both Windows XP disks and Linux disks and nothing will recognize them for install. Any idea what could be wrong?

I would try shining a flashlight into the drive bay, and make sure that nothing is blocking the pin connectors. Also, are you sure that the drive is sliding ALL the way into the slot and seating firmly?

I am pretty positive that the drives are in properly. I can hear the drive spinning when it is installed, so it must be getting power from the computer which makes me all the more confused as to why they are not recognized.

Is the HDD enabled in BIOS?

Sorry to hi-jack this post, but I have a similar issue.
the HDD is endabled in the BIOS

in the BIOS under under "Startup > Boot > Hard Drive"
I should see - IC25N040ATCS04-4-(PM)
But I instead I see something to the affect of - IC25N040ATCS04-4- ! ! ! ! (PM)

***i know that if there is an ! before the drive, it is disabled in the BIOS. but these 4 ! are after

I used this helpful flash "BIOS Simulator" on Lernovos website:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-42632

is my Hard drive controller on the MoBo messed up?
I also tried what "tfflivemb2" said, it is clean and clear, and much like the orriginal poster stated, the HDD is spinning.

tonight/tomorrow, I will create the CD image from the 'PC doctor' ISO on Lenovo's site.

Hopefully that will help

P.S i Tried Experts-exchange (usning my limited account) but the people there have no clue about whats going on asside from one poster who said it could be a bad HDD connection to or the HD controller on the MoBO is bad.

Could there be a HD password on the old one?
You'd have to reinsert the old HD, and remove the password in the BIOS.
Then try a new HD.

well for me, the old HD worked fine before and had NO password.

i am really stumped on this one... especially if i check another Thinkpad tomorrow and both Hard drives work in that machine... then ill be taking apart my T30 to see if there is a connection issue.
