What is a good source for a replacement CMOS battery?

#1 Post by motero99 » Fri Apr 11, 2008 11:45 pm

Tried to do the no-hack 1802 program on a T30. After rebooting and installing, I got an error and the bios timne had been reset to 1988 or whatever the default is. When I inserted the minipc card and rebooted, the 1802 error re-appeared. I am thinking that the battery needs replacing. What is a good source for the battery? Is this a regular battery you can purchase at a store?

The factory battery has a tiny connector soldered on the end of the two wires. It's generally not something you can find at your local store. Some people have used a standard CR2032, stripped off the tabs on the OEM battery and taped it to the new battery. Don't try soldering them on since it won't stick too well and excessive heat can make the battery explode. If you search eBay you can find one for a couple of $$$. That said, I have some used, but tested > 3.0V 02K6572 batteries with the black holder for $2.50 shipped USPS. Extra battery and holder for additional $1.

P.S. You can also put a WTB (Want To Buy) post here in the Marketplace forum.

BatteriesPlus Is Another Option

#3 Post by nikki605 » Sat Apr 12, 2008 8:18 am

Another option if you don't want to buy online; I took my dead CMOS battery into my local BatteriesPlus store. They took the pigtail leads off the old battery and attached it to a new CR2032 and covered it in heatshrink wrap. I can't remember the exact price, but I think it was around $7.

My preference is what Ray said with the CR2032 and a bit of electrical tape. It's simple and it works.

I have been using the electrical tape method for quite some time...namely after trying the soldering technique that Ray warned you against (it exploded). The one trick that I want to pass on is to keep pressure on the tape as you wrap it, so that the tape is rather stretched. It simulates the shrink wrapping effect.

CR2032 with solder connectors do exit in shops

#6 Post by dj123 » Sat Apr 12, 2008 10:13 pm

The first thing I tried to fix my TR21 BOD was replace the CR2032 (which showed somewhat low V). My local electronic parts shop sells a CR 2032 with two soldering connectors already attached. I just cut the wires at the original battery, soldered the wires to the new one and wrapped some insultating tape around the battery/wires, instead of the yellow shrink plastic on the original battery. If the solder enable battery exists in Australia, presumably even more so in N America.

PS edit: here it is what it looks like:

Thank you all for the good advice. I remembered that I had swapped out the battery for one that came with my used replacement mobo. I found the original and it still works. When it goes, I woll try the 3032 tricks.
