question about reloading some t23 and t30

#1 Post by stpeters » Sun Apr 13, 2008 7:18 pm

hi,
I am a tech support person for a small private school. A parent got his company to donate around 100 thinkpads to us. Older ones T30's and T23's.

I think I have a problem. The T30s all of the licence key for Xp on them and the donating company said they are donating the license too.

The problem is the T23's have license keys for win2000 pro , but they all have winxp pro on them. The company uses a company wide license of the winxp so they want to keep them.

Does anyone know how to get win2000 pro disks for the t23's or how I can purchase winxp to put on them? I believe that the disks have to be ibm oem disks. Is that true for the T23's even if I want to get xp and load them with a legit copy. We want to stay legal so using a hacked copy is out of the question.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!

That was a VERY nice find for your school!!

As for the disks for the Win2K disks...look for a PM.

Why do you want a specific ibm restore disk?

I think you can use a regular Windows 2000 professional CD to install windows 2000, and enter the key on the underside of the T23 into the setup.

I thought the thinkpad need the Ibm oem disks. I have attempted to install non oem disks on a dell before and would not work. I got dell to tell me that I needed an oem disk. I tried to reload win2000 pro on one of the t23's and got an error saying that the disk was not an iBM Disk

This won't work on an IBM. The CD-Keys are for the volume licensing that IBM did at the time. An OEM disk might work, but not a regular retail CD.

can you make bootable restores

#6 Post by stpeters » Wed Apr 16, 2008 7:55 am

I used to work for IBM. Did mostly Aix support stuff. We could make a tape that would be the entire system so we could reload the system or one similiar..

Is this possible on the thinkpads. Can I make a bootable cdrom that I would put the image back on the system if something went wrong..

Thanks for all the info so far it has been great.

You can use Rescue and Recovery, to create a bootable back up copy. Though, it won't back up your personal things, or additionally installed programs...just the OS and drivers.

The T22 (t23) is a pain to load 2kPro onto, I own 2 and have had to reload each a couple of times. It can be done....but you are not going to enjoy it.
That said, I have a couple of the docking stations that allow the Floppy in the lap top and a dvd or cdrw in the base.
By FAR the easiest way to do what you need, still not terrible fast, but easy none the less.
You need the 2kPro floppy disks, loaded into the floppy drive, power it up and it installs everything you need.
If you seriousley consider doing them 1 at a time, let me know.
Im thinking Ghost would be much faster.
