Updating Wireless circa 4/08

#1 Post by kblackav8or » Mon Apr 14, 2008 12:31 am

I am a newby on here. I have owned 3 Thinkpad's so far. A T21, a T30 and a T43P which my wife uses. I upgraded to 1 gig of ram in the T30 which will soldier on as my life support system as I will be away from home for quite some time over the next 8 or 9 months. So for the T30 I have been searching and finding some things but not totally understanding it all. I just learned about the Mini PCI port and that their are some variations in them. Mine supposedly has the Mini PCI Type IIIB. One of my first questions is, is there a current wireless card for that slot that supports Wireless N? I have been running N out of my PCMCIA slots for about 3 years now and long ago disabled the installed wireless B card. I removed it today after getting on this site and starting to really learn about these units. What are my options for faster internal wireless? The reason I am looking is I added an Adaptec PCMCIA USB 2.0 adapter which makes using most other cards very difficult in the empty slot. The wireless cards all have a bulge and the Adaptec card has a hump a camel would be proud of. It does work well for someone looking for USB 2.0 capability. It also has firewire capability as well. So back to my question - what are my internal wireless upgrade options. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, there is no "n" card that a T30 can use, all of these being mini-PCI-e, as opposed to mini-PCI in T30.

More "modern" cards...

Intell 2200BG will work with no need for hacking the BIOS in most cases.

If you need the card with "a" characteristics as well, my advice would be an Atheros a/b/g card, check the Forum Marketplace, underclocker was selling these for $30 shipped, and he still may have some left. You may have to hack the BIOS for these.
