Hitachi travelstart 7k100 sold out, next best thing?

#1 Post by android2000 » Thu Apr 17, 2008 4:01 am

Hi,

I ordered the 80GB 7200rpm drive to boost up my T21 (I now have the noisy slow standard 20GB), but I got an email that it is sold out and they are offering me the Western digital SCORPIO 2,5Inch HDD PATA 160GB 8MB 5400rpm.

Now i was thinking, because the WD has twice the storage, so the data density (area?) is SQRT(2) as much as the hitachi, so the amount of data passing trough the heads every second should be the same?

Does anyone has the elementary hard drive knowledge to answer this question?

There is a thread on this. The really big 5400 drives (250gb) infact have a higher transfer rate compared to the 7K100. The 7K100 still has the low-latency advantage to help it catch up though.

You should look at the specs of the 160gb scorpio to find out the transfer speed (for some reason I'm doubting it's faster than the 7K100, since it probably is 2x80gb density).

Examples of drives with faster than 7K100 transfer speeds: WD 250gb (2x125gb density), Samsung HM160HC (1x160GB).

Don't forget the 5400RPM Seagate Momentus 5400.3 with perpendicular recording!
They beat the 7K100!

This is very odd, i can't even get the 7K100 in Europe anymore.

Why is Hitachi not making them anymore? there must be a replacement coming up?
