T30 Wifi Indicator

#1 Post by Peter_Peril » Thu Apr 17, 2008 1:06 pm

I'm planning on going wireless soon and I had what I'm sure would be considered an inconsequential thought... which goes as follows: How do those who don't have a wifi signal indicator on the bezel of their T's (like the T40's, etc.) know they have a signal or that the card (mini-pci) is functioning. I assumed their would be some systray app type of indicator --am I right?

Windows XP has built-in wireless functionality. You can see clearly if you have a connection, or not. There is a little icon in your tray which does this.

If you hover over this icon, a text message will pop up, and you can see the network name (SSID), connection strength, and the connection state.

Yeah, as frankiepankie said, Windows XP and as most operating systems (generally Linux) have an indication on the systray about the wifi connection.

Also, though i haven't tested it but i think that IBM's Access Connections (something like that) displays an icon in the systray about the wifi status

The other option is to get an IBM part for the wifi card and get a clear plate for the T30 with a wifi indicator on it. That way it will show up on the lower LCD bezel.

Thanks HarryC. I saw an ebay listing for a T40 LCD bezel and then I came to my senses  Thanks to the other list members for their input to this almost inane post. I've never used wifi, so I'm behind the curve. Thankfully-- Windows functionality will dumb it down for me. Netstumbler looks useful too.

T40 bezel is quite different from the T30 bezel... it won't fit...

with win2k i'm using the intel wireless software and it shows what's going on with an icon in the system tray. opening it up i can also see all the APs around me and all of their particulars. this also makes it easy to turn the wireless on or off.

without this software the machine simply connects and away you go.
