T30 WiFi card installation

#1 Post by Harryc » Sun Apr 27, 2008 7:56 am

While installing a WiFi card in my T30, I noticed a sticker/envelope stuck to the systemboard, as seen if the below pic, grid E-6. It serves (2) purposes as far as I can tell. First it has the system board part # on it, also it has a small envelope on it so that you can stick the main and aux leads into it when they are not being used, presumably to avoid any shorts to the systemboard by the leads metal tips. My question is, do you need to remove that sticker/envelop when you install a mPCI WiFi card? It appears to be made out of a heat resistant plastic, but it pushes right up against the mPCI card when it is installed. I was concerned about air circulation around the part being cut off. Another thought I just had is that the card itself is supposed to go inside the envelope? Could that be possible? The fact that the top of it has one corner cut out where the main/aux leads go might lend credence to that thought.

Well, I think I just answered my own question. I took another look in the mPCI compartment. That envelope actually wraps around to the front of the installed card, and it has a strip of self adhesive on it so that it can stick to the front of the card. The main purpose is so that you can look at the systemboard part # without removing the mPCI card. :). I love it when a design engineer uses his head...

What! There is a method to the madness of PCB layout. My question is--what if it wasn't there? Would any component on the mPCI be compromised by grounding or contact with the mobo?

I don't think so. The mPCI card itself is definitely raised up and away from the systemboard PCB.
