T20 freezes afer about 45 min of use???
T20 freezes afer about 45 min of use???
I have a t20 upgraded to a 900mhz cpu, windows xp sp2. The problem is after about 45 mins it will just freeze after making a wierd noise from the hd, it is the original hd and quite noisey!!!. I have to shut it down after freezing using the power button, because nothing works. Also I booted up into safe mode and had no freezing at all even after 2.5 hours. Oh here are some more info , 256 meg ram, I checked the fan and it seams to be working fine, and also proped it up to give it air flow underneth. I am personally thinking that its either the hd or may software related considering it does not freeze in safe mode!. Any help would be great!

If the fan has been upgraded and fresh thermal grease applied, the next place to look would be that HD. If that is the original HD I would test it with fitness test from the manufacturer.

I'd say it's a CPU heat issue. Make sure CPU temps are in the correct range, for example with MobileMeter.

You might also consider a diagnostic boot setup using msconfig. Although I agree with the previous suggestions. Give us the specs of you HDD; I'm curious to know if it's the original one. Either way prognosis is good for a solution.

harddrive overheating??
Ran mobile meter temps for cpu got up to 80 c then dropped down to 71c then froze again. restarted and i could not get anywhere, I felt the bottom of the laptop and it was very hot !, like almost too hot to touch. So I took the heatsink/fan assem apart and all that was under the heatsink was a piece of rubber( I think its rubber) no thermal compound!. Now I was also reading somewhere that the max temp for the harddrive is around 55c is this true??, and if so is there a way to get the temp from the hd?. does pc doctor work on t20`s ?. Thank You all for the input on this problem that has been driving me crazy!!

MobileMeter can also read the temperature of the hard drive, if the drive supports that feature. PC Doctor for DOS for the T2x systems is available from here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4YZM3F
I also host an .ISO file of this program which you can burn onto a CD:
http://www.kawakami-ca.com/ibm_t2x/ibm_t22_pcdiag.iso
You might also want to try running the Windows Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL when running Windows), clicking the Processes tab and seeing what (if any) is consuming the most CPU percentage. You may have a program stuck in a loop, malware, or something else which is eating up CPU cycles.

Re: harddrive overheating??
That was most likely an old thermal pad.rangerxlt wrote:all that was under the heatsink was a piece of rubber( I think its rubber) no thermal compound!.
Remove it and clean both CPU and cooler with isopropyl/isopropanol alcohol.
Then apply thermal paste (preferably Arctic Silver) in the size of a rice corn onto the CPU. Use a credit card to spread it evenly all over the little CPU rectangle.
Clean all the dust off the CPU fan blades before putting it back in.
Wiggle the cooler a bit left/right while pressing it onto the CPU, before you put the screws back in.
It'll take about 24 hours for that paste to settle in.

Re: T20 freezes afer about 45 min of use???
I was wondering that is it possible to get rid of the orginal thermal tape between cpu and cooler? Would it be better when fan connects directly to the cpu with basic thermal paste? Normally without tape, there's littlebit space between cpu and cooler. Isit possible to take of some material from cooler to make it touch cpu ? electric contacts may be a problem ?

Re: T20 freezes afer about 45 min of use???
Wondering - have you tried a laptop cooler UNDER the unit? They're less that $20 and will run off the USB connection (OK if you're on AC).

No I haven't and I'm not gonna try either.RRHODY wrote:Wondering - have you tried a laptop cooler UNDER the unit? They're less that $20 and will run off the USB connection (OK if you're on AC).

Re: T20 freezes afer about 45 min of use???
I just realize that the rubber/thermal pad is probably required on a T20/T21 cooler!
The T22 cooler 'sits' directly on top of the CPU and is happy with only thermal paste. This cooler is also "spring-loaded".
But the T20/T21 cooler seems to have a small gap there, which is filled by the thermal pad.
This pad gets squeezed quite a bit, so I can't really estimate how wide this gap is.
If someone has a T20/T21 and this pad is not there, perhaps s/he could try to find out how thick a piece of paper (unfolded, folded once, twice, or ??) can fit between CPU and cooler?

T20 and T21 does not use the same fan assembly.
The T21 one is spring loaded and does not contain the rubber pad.

T20/T21 use the same cooler.
Only the T22 is different AFAIK.
(Not to mention a different T23 cooler as well).

Re: T20 freezes afer about 45 min of use???
I just changed a CPU on my dads T20 as the old one was only registering working at between 140-180 mhz. The new (used) one is 750mhz and works at 748mhz according to the properties screen of 'my computer'
There was a pad on the bottom of the fan, but I added a thin layer of silver paste anyway. Should i not have done that (pad & paste)?

I did some quick measurements and this is not possible and or worth of try.Masi_K wrote:I was wondering that is it possible to get rid of the orginal thermal tape between cpu and cooler?
