T21 lots of beeps but no Boot

#1 Post by Spider#2 » Fri May 02, 2008 10:33 pm

I'm new to this forum so before posting I read almost everything relating to BoD. My unit is a 2647 8EU running Windows 2000. I purchased it refurbished and used it for about 2yrs or until we purchased a newer and faster HP Laptop. It ran great all the while we used it on somewhat regular basis (except battery only lasted 1/2hr at most between charges). The T21 sat in the corner after we got the new laptop. My wife found a buyer and wanted me to clean up any personal and/or unwanted files.
So I chrged it up for a while (1hr) after pressing start..1-3-3-1 beeps, hd lights for 1 second others remain on for first set of 3 beeps then only "Z" remains lit for duration of beeps. I tested cmos battery (3.2V), pulled memory, pulled CD, tried AC only, tried Bat only, plugged in standard monitor which indicated it was not connected to any signal. Last of all I attempted booting from CD. I also tried waiting as suggested in a reply. (battery and AC disconnected)
I want to guess it's the HD, but I can hear something spinning, which could be the cooling fan. No banging or clunking noises can be heard.
Where do I go from here.

1-3-3-1 is more than likely faulty/wrong memory. You will get the same beep code if no memory is installed. I see that you removed memory but didn't state whether you replaced it. Try testing or swapping memory if you have any. Test with memtest+ bootable cd www.memtest.org.

Howdy neighbor! Welcome to the forum!

Yes, I agree with vanaya...it sounds like a problem with the ram. 1-3-3-1 is either ram, or the system board. I have a T23 that has the 1-3-3-1 beep code, and it isn't the ram slots.

EDIT: If you are able to try another stick of ram to test it, and it still doesn't work, I might be willing to take it off your hands. I can always use another project!

Fixed-at least temporarily.

I have just the one ram stick so I pulled it and inserted in other slot. Booted up like normal.
Thanks.
Later I'll switch back and see what happens.
By the way, any idea what the T21 should selling for?
Thanks again.

I put ram stick back in original location and all seems OK. Don't know if this is good or bad.
Thanks again for assistance.
BTW we're getting $150 for it.

It maybe that the contacts on that chip are dirty or the whole stick is about to fail. Just so that the new buyers are happy and don't come back stating you sold them a bad lappy, check that stick with memtest. It is a simple program. Make the bootable cd and insert in to the drive and start your computer. That's it!! The program runs automatically. I usually let the program run overnight. I your case let it run a a few passes, 3 or so, about and hour. On the right side of the screen it will tell you % of pass completed and if there are any errors.
