When, many years ago i was employed as a service engineer in the television trade, we used to compile a list of stock faults for various televisions we worked on, this saved numerous hours sweating over a hot oscilloscope and Avo 8 meter trying to discover where a fault was located.
Would it not be a good idea to produce a list of problems and solutions for laptops, i only mention the T30 as i have several but this could be useful for all models.
I am sure there are probably a few ex IBM service engineers who are members of this forum who could provide the information.
To generalise regarding motherboards and just say replace it does not really help anyone who is capable of repairing the thing.
I am sure many problems are just down to faulty integrated circuits but without a proper service manual available, anyone attempting a repair would be totally in the dark as to where to start.
Any problem which could be resolved by pointing someone in the direction of a faulty component on the mobo would be invaluable and save a lot of money in the process.

Circuit diagrams for any TP are the best-kept secret from IBM.
Nobody (apart from IBM-staff) has ever even seen one of those.
For the more common problems, these have been amply discussed in the respective forums/fori.
T30's main problem is a non-working memory slot, which can easily be fixed with resoldering all the RAM contacts on the mobo.
Less than 15-20 minutes to solve it.
The other frequently occurring T30 problem involves re-balling the graphics card.
Our in-house repair person jamiphar has the equipment for it, if you are not in the know.

The reason i made the post was so that all available info could maybe be grouped according to model in one place so that it is instantly available to anyone requiring help, it would save having to trawl through numerous threads and possibly not being able to find the answer you are looking for.
Just a suggestion.
