T30 Wireless problem.

#1 Post by giacobidis » Mon May 19, 2008 12:28 am

On my XP SP3 T30 with a Cisco mini wireless adapter, I have recently realized that it does not detect any wireless network (I have swapped my old router with an one that supports wifi). What could be wrong? I remember months ago that it could detect networks of other apartments in my building. The notification is there on the tray and upon boot reports that there is no wireless network available. I can confirm that there are others by my wife's laptop that connects wireless to my rooter. The adapter seems to be working as the system does not show any problems in the device list.
Could you help me please?

Best regards,
Nikos.

Install Netstumbler and see if that finds any networks
http://www.netstumbler.com/
If it does, you need to adjust/upgrade/reinstall your networking.
Let Windows manage your wifi instead of AccessConnections.

I have tried Netstumbler and it didn't find any networks (I have placed my T30 next to my router to eliminate any chances of too weak signal).
Could it be a service not running? I have tried updating the driver but the update ends with a message like no device found in HardwareList. After this in the device list the Cisco mini PCI wlan seems to be o.k. as the system reports that the driver is o.k. and the device is working.
Could it also be a wrong driver? I have also set Windows to manage my wifi and did not install Access Control.

How have you set up your networking?
Obtain IP/DNS automatically, or do you use a static IP/DNS?
Can you connect to your router, using a Cat5 cable?
Can you ping your router, or your wife's laptop?
Is your firewall blocking the wifi perhaps?

You can find all info you may need here:

I have set it up for dynamic IP/DNS. When I use the cable I can connect to my router and my wife can connect to it via wifi (she has Vista).
I have disabled completely my firewall. Upon googling it, I have come across the "Update for Windows XP (KB917021)" after many had reported that SP2 installation had caused them this problem.
I will try it now and get back with results.

Did you have other wifi-cards in there before?
These need to be cleaned up.

I have never had any other wifi stuff on my T30. I was wondering if the antenna has a problem.

If Windows manages your connections, make sure the Wireless Zero Config Service is running.

Click on Start/Run, type in services.msc and hit enter.
Check if the following Services have started:
DHCP client
DNS client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
TCP/IP NetBios

Can you try another wifi card, or try your Cisco card in another laptop?
If your card is 802.11b, does your router also send a 802.11b signal, or does it send only a 802.11g signal (which your wife's laptop would pick up).
In that case, get a newer 802.11 b/g or a/b/g or even a/b/g/n card.

I have switched my router to 802.11b and it worked!

Thank you very much for your invaluable support!

You're welcome.
If you don't need to send large files from one laptop to the other, you should be fine at 'only' the 11Mb of 802.11b standard.
Enjoy!

Is it possible to replace it with a more recent one? Can I remove it so that it does not consume any power?

Yes, you can replace it.
The easiest/cheapest would be a b/g card like Intel 2200 or Intel 2915 or Broadcom BCM94306MP.
It depends on the max. speed of your router.
If that's 802.11g, about 54Mbs, if SuperG, about 108Mbs.
If the new n-standard, up to 300Mbs.
The above are the theoretical maximum speeds.
In real life it's more like 35-40/75-80/????

Don't forget the most important thing: the speed of your broadband connection. If you get only 1-3Mbs coming in via DSL/satellite or whatever, you can still only surf the net at max 1-3Mbs.
What your network can do between PCs/laptops is entirely different.

i have exactly same problem with my T23. since I got it (1 year ago), I was only able once to have wireless connection to the internet. Now it doesn't see any networks whatsoever.
i downloaded netbuster and I've installed it. I got a message that my card was set up to detect only networks with name "[] [][][][] [][][][][][][] [][]." I have no idea what it means... Anyways, netbuster suggested to change these settings and I was asked to perform one of the following actions:
1) remove the card
2) disable/ re-enable the card
3) reboot
I tried doing number 2 and 3 but to no avail...
any ideas what i can do next?

Matt, what sort of wifi have you got in that T23, built-in or PCMCIA?
Does your router send a signal that your wifi card can receive?
Or is your router sending G and your card is B (or vice versa)?

- i know that my T60 is seeing 13 network connections but my T23 is not seeing a single one

Don't make this like going to the dentist where one has to pull every bit of information out of you!

What is your:
T23 TYPE 2647-xxx?
Make/Model wifi card?
Official inbuilt wifi or home-made internal wifi?
Make/Model router?
How far is the T23 from the router?
Does the T23 connect via Cat5 cable?
etc....

IBM High Rate Wireless LAN MiniPCI Combo Card is 802.11b. Set your router config to transmit 802.11b.

Open the router manual and read it. Unknown how it will effect other machines. If there is a dual (or mixed) mode setting most likely no effect as far as being able to connect, but some routers will ratchet down to 11mbps if running both 802.11b and 802.11g machines. That may have no impact, but it depends on who is doing what locally with file transfers on the LAN.

Like I said above:

Get an Intel 2200BG or 2915ABG if you can't change the router.

2wire

#22 Post by furiousmonkey » Sun May 25, 2008 6:43 am

I am familiar with the 2wire routers, I have two.

If you want to look at the configuration for that router.

google keyword "2wire", click on the first link, once the page is open, click on the button for support. Look down the page until you see, "Drivers and Documentation" click on the link.
Scroll down to "Drivers and Documentation" and you will see the middle option thats the 2700 that you were talking about, click on userguide.

The rest is up to you, remember, if you change any settings write down what the original was, in case your parents computer stops working!
