Upgrading T23 LCD screen from XGA to SXGA? *PIC*

#1 Post by Turbo1dr » Sun Jun 08, 2008 8:54 am

I'd like to change my LCD to a higher resolution screen but need to know if the connectors are the same that plug into the lower half of the laptop?

Thanks!

Here's what I have but with an upgraded DL-DVD burner, 160GB hard drive, 1GB Memory

Original Description taken from Lenovo website:

Product: ThinkPad T23 2647-EU9
Operating system: WinXP Pro

Original description: Based on 2647-8NU: PIII-M 1.13GHz (512KB), 128MB RAM, 30.0GB HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 8x4x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Modem(MPCI), Ethernet(CDC), TV out, Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

You will need a different cable.

To do that, you need a different SXGA+ (1400x1050 resolution) LCD panel (P/N 46L2493 or 46L2495) and a different LCD-cable (P/N 27L0590).
The inverter is the same. Get the Hardware Maintenance Manual to find out how to take the T23 apart.
You'll need to remove the front bezel of the LCD lid.
Also the keyboard, keyboard hinges cover and the palmrest.
The rest can stay in place.
(take the battery out and disconnect from AC.)

I know where I can get the entire SXGA LCD with hinges, bezels and cable. If the connections are the same on both the XGA and SXGA to the motherboard/video card then I'll go ahead and get the LCD panel. I'm sure this will slow the machine down due to the higher resolution from the video card. This leads me to another question.......is the video card upgradable?

Thanks.

The connector on the motherboard is the same for XGA & SXGA+.
There is no noticeable delay because of SXGA+.
The graphics chip is soldered onto the motherboard, and is not upgradeable.

Just wanted to say that the upgrade to the SXGA+ went smoothly. It's very nice to have a larger desktop area on such a small screen.

The screen I bought was from a T21 and it came as an entire unit including the housing, cable and hinges; no wireless antenna. My T23 has internal 804.11b antenna's so I had to swap the LCD into my T23 housing.
T23 - PIII-M 1.13GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 14.1 SXGA+, 8xDL-DVD+/-R/RW Burner, 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Modem(MPCI), Ethernet(CDC), TV out, Windows Vista Ultimate - Runs pretty snappy!

Glad to hear the swap went well. That's a pretty sweet ride you have there!

That's a fair bit of power you get out of that car (ca. 600HP).
I was looking for a photo of a laptop being used there. Where?

If you like/need another laptop for automotive diagnosis etc., I have an older Compaq Armada 7400, which would be ideal for such work.
It's heavy, but really sturdy, has a Serial port etc. Great nick too!

I didn't realize I didn't have a photo of the laptop in the car hooked up to the computer system. Here's a screen shot of the gauges displayed on the screen along with fuel trim, spark timing and other real-time data while the car is being driven down the road.

Real time gauges on the laptop! Would be nice if I could get another monitor to display these as my actual gauges all the time!

This link shows a recorded data log of a wide open throttle run. The vertical white line in the log file is displaying what each sensor is reading at that given time in the text below. Each colored line in the graph is the same colored sensor being displayed on the bottom also.

Thanks for the offer on the laptop but it's really too slow for accessing DVD based information off of 11 DVD's. We (the shop) normally copy all the DVD's to the hard drive of our server for even faster access to the files. I'm sure it would be fine to just get codes and reading data streams.

Looking at your MPG (27.5) on the dashboard picture, I'm really getting jealous!
I have a Ford Explorer Limited with a V8 and only a few hundred HP, and the best I've ever seen was 22.3MPG. On average it does 15.9MPG.
Time to soup it up?
