CPU upgrade on a 2647 86G T20

#1 Post by badgersbum » Sat Jun 14, 2008 6:48 pm

Hi wonderful tech type gurus.
I am a happy amateur over in Englandshire in the good old U of K; I have resurrected an old T20 and upgraded the HDD to 40GB and the memory to 512MB. I thought that the next logical step would be to up the CPU. I have the chance to get my hands on a dead T23 with a good processor and video card but not much else so my question is, will the processor (1Ghz) just drop in and be happy or would I need to upgrade the fan/heatsink as well?
Thanks for reading and any help would be much appreciated!

Welcome to our Forum.
I'm afraid you're out of luck.
The best that you can do on your model T20 is a 900Mhz Intel SL53T (P/N 08K3346) or a 1GHz Intel SL53S (P/N 08K3392) or if you can find it, an Intel SL5TF (no IBM P/N).
In all these cases you first need to update the BIOS and the Embedded Controller Program, and you also need to get your hands on the (larger) CPU-fan of a T22 (P/N 26P9317).
The 1GHz (or any other) CPU from a T23 has the wrong (faster) FrontBusSpeed and will not work in a T20/21/22.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
