T30 fan problem - intermittant

#1 Post by jamnkats » Sun Jun 22, 2008 9:57 pm

My T30 has been chugging along for 4 years without any problem. Well, I do have the memory slot problem and what a joy to find there is a fix. Anyway, the last month (maybe?) I have been getting either a fan error upon power up or it just won't power up. I keep trying and trying (for a while it would always work if I unplugged the unit from AC) and eventually (so far) it boots. Today I took the fan assembly out of my parts T30 (bad mobo) and swapped it out. I still have the exact same problem and with the keyboard off, I could see that the fan simply does not spin until one time it decides to spin and that is when it will boot.

I am running Notebook Hardware Control and can see the CPU temp going up and then falling back down - I also have a notebook cooler that the laptop sits on ALWAYS. I don't think the CPU is overheating - I've been watching it since the problem started.

T30 2366-81U still works but not being currently used. I think I'll rectify that situation.
T40 2373-19U dead
(2) T42 2373-JXU with Flexview LCDs. One with either GPU or southbridge issue.
T43 2687-D4U with possible software problem. Awaiting R&Rs.

maybe your "new" fan is as dirty and worn as the original one :?
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T

The new fan is quite clean (compared to the old one) and both spin up very easily outside the box. I would say they are working as they spin and then stop - they don't just spin indefinately. I would try to get a new fan (and I might) but could it be possible that 2 fans are bad? The machine is VERY clean - it was dirty - and there is no dust or anything procluding the fan from spinning up.

I have temporarily solved this by never powering down the T30 and have NHC running to watch the temperature. I put the old (dirty) fan back in but I'm afraid to mess with it any further as it takes FOREVER to get the machine to boot as the fan will work once the machine is booted but has a REALLY hard time spinning up upon boot.

Any other ideas?

if you remove the upper casing of the fan - the thin one opposite to the label side (it's very easy) you can extract the fan rotor and clean/lube the shaft

I'll try that! Thanks! We're headed to a big city (80km away) - Cancun - for a Costco stockup and to see if I can find some thermal paste there.

DH will put your advice to good work. :)
