Arctic Silver or thermal paste?

#1 Post by jamnkats » Mon Jun 23, 2008 2:02 pm

I've been looking into thermal paste to go between the CPU and heat sink and wonder if Arctic Silver would work there also? Is there a reason to use one over the other?

Just use a good quality paste from a good electronics parts store. If you cannot discern, then Arctic Silver is known to be good. I got good paste locally years ago from a reputable place, and my T41 runs nice and cool. ... JDH

thanks so much, Ron. I should have searched first. It is looking like I'll have to get it when we go back to the US for a stock-up trip.

I am not finding either of these options here - would a wad of aluminium foil work better that the rubber stuff I currently have between the heat sink and CPU?

costs only a few dollars on eBay. Or have it mailed to you by a US relative/friend.

mail in Mexico never arrives. Even stamps are stolen off postcards. :) Mail is very much NOT an option. I'll get some when we go to the US to stock up, but in the meanwhile, will aluminium foil work?

Thanks!

No on the foil

Have you got an Autozone close by?

No, it wouldn't.
A tiny drop of a good mineral oil will 'hold' for a while, but will eventually evaporate/resolve into powder. Only for short-term emergencies.

Read up on Die Electric Grease.
Not great but far better than anything I can think of in the area you are in.

thanks guys - there are AutoZones north of us (we've seen them in Saltillo and maybe even Villahermosa) but those towns are days away. I'll see if I can't get someone to bring me some down here and I'll read up on the die electric grease (sorry if I butchered that).

Anyone headed to the Caribbean? :)

Ok, I'm getting ready to order this today - do I need the cleaning kit also (going to use it on the T30, the T40 and the Toshiba Satellite A55)? Will one tube be enough for 3 CPU/heat sinks (don't know if I can get the Toshiba apart). Is the cleaning kit ($20USD) necessary?

One small tube (what I have in the basement) will last a very long time. You need just a dab to do one CPU. The layer should be very thin and cover the entire area. No excess should squeeze out when you install the CPU, yet the entire surface should be covered.

Cleaning kit is not necessary. Some Isopropyl or isopropanol will do.
If you don't have that, some medicinal alcohol will work also.

In a pinch I have used Vodka, Rum and Everclear.
The better the booze the better the cleaning

One time I had this killer tooth ache and couldn't get to a dentist (it was the middle of the night). I found some internet site which recommended holding some rum in your mouth to dull the pain. It seemed to work, but when I asked my dentist about it, he said rum has a lot of sugars in it and its not good for your teeth. Swallowing the rum seemed to work better anyway.

So to get on point: Wouldn't the sugars also be bad for circuits? I have been cleaning my electronics with this quick-dry electronics cleaner. Its made by CRC and comes in a blue spray can, but I can't remember the exact name. A small bit of it on a paper towel takes off thermal grease completely. Great stuff.

I thought about clarifying the rum, but i used the really good stuff.
No spiced, no brown, just clear booze.
I keep a pint of vodka over my work bench. Its 10 years old and still has 1/3 of the bottle left (Im not a big drinker)
Ive also used Throttle Body Cleaner, Electircal Contact cleaner and air intake cleaner.
Anything that dries without leaving a residue will work.
Soap and Water will work PROVIDED you have ample time to let them dry out.
I have thrown numerous keyboards in the dishwasher, then let them dry in the sun for 4 or 5 days with no ill effects.

sorry guys, but there is NO WAY my Havana Club 7 year or my Flor de Caña 12 year is going on the Thinkpad. I love my machine, but I love my rums much more. :) As long as I'm ordering the Arctic Silver I'll order some cleaner.

Most of these are modified Dow Corning thermal compounds; DC-340, TC-5021, TC-5022, TC-5026, TC-5121. I use a tube of DC-111 which is formally a vacuum seal compound. I used it on everything including a 2.4Ghz P4-M in my A31.

Jeez for a bottle of that nectar I would gladly send you a few tubes of artic silver. On a curious note were you serious about using foil for a conductor?
