T30 Wireless Problems

#1 Post by Kanilas » Sat Jun 28, 2008 12:48 am

About a year ago, I suddenly had a problem with my T30's internal wireless card. (Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG). I sent my T30 off to get the broken RAM slot fixed, and when it came back, the wireless card wasn't working. Called IBM, they told me there was nothing they could do, but for me to ship back the now out of warranty machine, and pay them to take a look at it. What it does when the card is installed now is to beep at me on boot up, and shut down immediately. No text or anything. If I remove the card, everything works fine.

Instead, I bought a PCMIA card from Linksys, and used that for a long while. I bought a new TRENDnet TEW-421 PC card almost 6 months ago, and installed that. Everything was going fine until a month ago, when everything went wrong. Suddenly, the internet would work, albeit at a slower speed, but only for about 5 minutes. After about 5 minutes of connection time to the internet, something happens, and all the websites time out. I've run the card under the Windows Wireless Zero service, and the TrendNet utility.

Can someone please recommend something to try to fix either of these problems? I'd love to get my internal card working again, or to solve the PCMIA issue. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

Run PC Doctor
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-56222
Check that the antenna wires do not short anywhere.
Clean the contacts from the internal card with a pencil-eraser.

Buy/borrow other internal or PCMCIA cards.

My internal card stopped working quite a while ago - on both the T40 and the T30. I simply started using PCMCIA cards. Are you saying your PCMCIA card no longer works? If it has a warranty, I'd send it in and get a new one. Otherwise, I'd do the same. :) I think the Marketplace also has internal wireless (daughterboard) cards for sale. I've been using a Belkin for over a year and am very happy with it - last trip to the US I got a My Essentials PCMCIA for the T40 and it has been working flawlessly since November last year.
T30 2366-61U dead mobo
T30 2366-81U still works but not being currently used. I think I'll rectify that situation.
T40 2373-19U dead
(2) T42 2373-JXU with Flexview LCDs. One with either GPU or southbridge issue.
T43 2687-D4U with possible software problem. Awaiting R&Rs.

Yes, my PCMIA cad stopped working. But it's not just the card, I've used multiple other cards borrowed from friends, on both slots, and nothing seems to allow me to be online for more that ~5 minutes. It still shows I'm online, but after that certain mark, I can't access websites anymore, instead it just times out.

When was the last time you did some housekeeping on that T30, i.e. emptied internet cache, temp directories, defragged etc.?
Could your hard disk be bursting out of its seams?
Get CCleaner here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ and run it.

And while you're at it, could you please fill in your Location in the User Profile?

Running the CC Cleaner now. Thanks for the suggestion. After that, if it doesn't work, I'll try PCDoctor, and if that fails, I'll try going in and cleaning the contacts with an eraser like mentioned above. Thanks for all the input! I'll let you know how it goes.

I's working! It had been a while since I had attempted to boot with the Mini-PCI card in, and when it booted, it came up with an 1802 error, which I looked up online, and then corrected. I cleaned the connections too, like suggested. Now it's running with the internal wireless card, and the T30 antenna, and reception is great. Thanks for all the suggestions, especially the CCleaner, I removed almost 5GB of crap, and fixed 400 registry errors.

Thanks again to thinkpads.com for the awesome help!
