HDD Partition During R&R

#1 Post by Peter_Peril » Thu Jul 10, 2008 10:37 pm

After I reinstalled my XP System on a larger HDD with a set of Recovery Disk; I discovered that I can't resize the primary partition. I've tried Partition Magic and GParted and neither will let me accomplish this task.

Partition Magic fails in windows during the reboot process without an error message and GParted shows the entirety of the drive 149 GB as unallocated in linux. :?

I think I'll try Partition Magic again from a Boot CD...but before I do I thought I share my failure with the forum...anyone care to save me from my shame. :help:

Might be worth getting PM to check for errors first in DOS, check in PM's partition info as well first in windows before you go any further. But it sounds to me as though PM is corrupted or not installed properly, try reinstalling.

What version of PM are you using ?

Sometimes you have to move the logical partitions up first one at a time to make space before enlarging the primary.

Good luck.
Where to begin......
390e x1 390X 390X,700mhz
1 x T20 + about 8 untested for spares
4 X T23 + 6 breaking for parts
1 X T23 with Samsung 840 SSD and XP Great combination !

AND NOW....3 X T60s and 3 x T61s

Following up on my earlier post. I've discovered that most of my problems with Keyboard and HDD partitioning, etc. Were all symptoms of a failing motherboard.

I had just resolved my partition problem when the Keyboard became radically intermittent; my ability to type characters would switch on and off. The cursor would fail to register single and double clicks. Eventually it degenerated into flickering windows.

I was never certain that I had a faulty keyboard and this new issue convinces me that a board level component is going or gone.
Looks like My TP days are over for a while ... Guess it's time for a new one.

I was able to resize my original C: Drive partition and to add a user-data only D: Drive partition using...

DOS Version of Norton Partition Magic 8.0.

I have a 1.44 floppy drive for my Ultra-bay, so I ran using DOS Start-up diskette instead of Windows XP.

Before dumping your T30, run PC Doctor.
You might also have a bad KB as mentioned, or a flaky KB connector.

Thanks Guys. I neglected to mention that I updated the UltraNav driver to the lastest version, I rolled back to the earlier version and things are stable-- yet still not normal.

I've run PC doctor test frequently in my attempts to troubleshoot the 0210 Stuck Key Error; and the system has passed. The keyboard works flawlessly in DOS mode testing; although the key referenced in the error code is not listed on the system. In Win32 it's a different story. I usually have play around to get the touchpad clicks and the keyboard to work properly--temporarily!

It's baffling? Is it a hardware problem complicated by software overlay or software problem exclusively?
