T23 & T22 Windows XP SP3 Shutdown issue

I've been rebuilding a couple old systems and adding ram, bigger hard drives, replacing screens, keyboards etc.

I just installed Windows XP SP2 on both and imediately upgraded to SP3. Now when I try to shut down either one, I experience problems when I get to the (Windows is shutting down) screen. When the computer used to just turn off, they no longer do. They seem to just hang there. If I hold the Power button for 5 seconds it will turn off. When I turn it back on, it seems to not be having any problems at all.

It installed most of the updates, but there were a dozen or so updates it can't install.

Any ideas?

I didn't have the shut-down problem but I did notice that a few updates won't work/run if SP3 has been installed. I uninstalled SP3 and then the other updates would install fine. I'd try uninstalling SP3 and see what happens with your shutdown problem. FWIW, I didn't see any reason to have SP3 for myself.

My T21 had been running WinXp SP2, without problem when SP3 was released. I waited a month or so to see what issues surfaced and then updated to SP3.

There is a known problem after installing SP3 with Windows update problems. One or more of the Windows update dlls have to be reregistered. Here is one of many forum posts on the subject:

In my case, I found the only one I had to reregister was wups2.dll, but it can't hurt to do the others. It worked for me and I've not have a problem with Windows update since. Just remember to stop and then restart the Windows update service.

As far as your shutdown/turnoff problem, I've not experienced that, either before or after SP3. Maybe another member here can be of more help with that problem.
