T30: HD Upgrading Question, PLEASE help.

#1 Post by KarMar7 » Tue Jul 15, 2008 9:27 am

My T30 right now only has a 20gb hard drive and only 256 mb of RAM!

I NEED TO UPGRADE!

Right now I'm thinking of buying a
160gb Seagate IDE ATA/100 Hard Drive.

I can also buy a 80gb Toshiba brand drive.

I want the most memory, but I don't want to wreck, harm, or cause damage to my computer. Please help.

Welcome to the forum!

I'd go with Seagate drive, bigger is often better, and Seagate is my preference...on ALL my personal machines except 701C.

Your T30 will take 2x1Gb PC2100 or 2700 (DDR 266 or 333) laptop RAM.

Hope this helps.

George is right on the mark of course, but there might be a few more things you could consider doing.

If you are doing the RAM, it's all but impossible to find new PC2100 DDR and for purposes of future use, I'd do PC2700 anyway, which you can move over to the T40/41/42 and R50/51.

Secondly, if you haven't already done so, you might consider upgrading the MPCI wireless card that came with your machine. Without going to the trouble of doing "N" (and adding another antenna), you can upgrade to the Intel 2200 to get "G" or some of the Atheros chipped cards, which why paired with Atheros chipped WiFi routers will give you the "Super G" 108Mbp speed.

There are of course other things that you can do such as replacing the XGA screen with an SXGA+ or going to a faster P4-M CPU (up to around 2.4Ghz), but those projects are a little more involved than openning an access panel.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

there is another thing...
an 160gb HDD is considerably hotter than the original hdd...
and already with the 40 gb hdd the T30 is very hot in that area (added the heat form the RAM) ... i'm not sure that in time this won't damage the mobo...
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T
