T21 and it's embedded controller

#1 Post by Ian-B » Wed Jul 30, 2008 11:13 am

Hi all,

Need some help here. I have a T21 (2647-8AG) which has a small problem. The problem is that it will shut down when it gets too hot. It did not do this until it was flashed with a latter bios (this being 1.13 and above with the embedded controller version of 1.05 / 1.06).

I have tried to downgrade it back to 1.01 (frimware 1.04a) with out any luck :( Can someone please tell me what I have to do to downgrade the embedded controller to 1.01.

TIA

Ian

You need to have 'matching' BIOS and ECP versions.
I don't think you can downgrade.
If overheating is the problem, take the CPU cooler off, clean it and the CPU all up, clean the fan of any dust-bunnies, and apply Arctic Silver thermal paste between CPU and cooler.
That should fix it.

I have cleaned the CPU and replaced the fan with a new one and put arctic paste on the cpu, problem still exists, I've even blown the system out with compressed air.

As for the firmware, I have downgraded to 1.04a but the embeded controller is still at 1.06 !

I want to downgrade the embedded controller to 1.01.

My T21 (2647-47U) has been running BIOS version 1.16 (KZET34WW) 2004-04-28 and imbedded controller version 1.06 for several years and I have not experienced an over-heating problem. I've even upgraded to a 1GHz CPU with a T22 fan/heatsink and its not overheated.

I think your problem is something else.

Have you checked your CPU temp with MobileMeter? This little utility will read your CPU and HDD temp. I have it installed on my T21 and occasionally check my temps.

You can download it here:

EDIT: With the CPU idling, the original 800MHz CPU would run at around 41°C and the fan was not running. Under high CPU utilitation, the fan came on at around 79°C and immediately started dropping the temp to around 70°C and held it there until the CPU utilization dropped.

The 1GHz CPU runs just about the same except its idle temp is around 44°C and the fan is not running.

My 7200RPM HDD's temp is usually around 41°C.

All of these readings were taken with no PCMCIA cards installed because those slots are very close to the CPU and generate a lot of their own heat.

Wow, the fan 'waits' for the CPU to reach 79C to start spinning it's a problem.

Anyways, download the MobilMeter utility and monitor your CPU temp. I don't know if TPFanControl would work on T2x series, I've tested it on a A22e machine and it works. Maybe what you could do is to take a look when the fan starts rotating and if the CPU temp is decreasing/increasing. I think the fan turn on way too late when the CPU is too hot, but tests need to be done
