tea spill, ultranav problem

#1 Post by Viktor » Thu Aug 07, 2008 3:31 pm

hi guys, recently i spilled tea on my T30, touchpad area. i turned off the notebook immediately, wiped it from the ouside, disassembled it but i saw no tea inside. so i just puted it altogether, turned on and noticed that the ultranav device is not working correctly. so i disassembled it again, still seeing no tea inside and tryied to clean all the places that were accesible with distilled water, then letting it dry for almost 8 hours. after assembling the machine, ultranav device is in better condition than before, but the "left button" is still not working. i mean, trackpoint left button, touchpad left button and also tapping on touchpad doesn't work, everything else is fine. and when i plug in earphones, there is some noise in background, not loud, but it surely is not ok. it gets louder whenever i move the pointer. it makes different sound when i move with touchpad or with trackpoint or with external usb mouse. i can tell you which device you use by sound :D so, the point of this all is that i don't know, what to do ... is the system board damaged? or do you know which part is? i will disassemble the notebook, again, but i would like to know, where to look for any left tea or for the damaged part. thanks

In any case where a device is exposed to water, I recommend you let it try not for 8 hours, but a full day/night, as in 24 hours.

You could use a blow-dryer (low power, not blasting air through it, you're trying to dry using warmth instead of physically moving the moisture out of the machine) to speed it up, but even then, I wouldn't risk turning it on inside 24 hours, to be safe.

I can not help you on where else you might find remnants of the tea.

Good luck.

Lots of tea? Remember to remove the battery as well in case of shorts.

the tea had sugar in it? - seriously - it if had sugar - it may have developed some sticky residue somewhere...
check the connector of the touchpad

thank you for your advices, i didn't spill much of it, but looks like it was enough ... it was about 0.5 dcl of tea or less, with quite much sugar, let's say, as much as the tea could handle :) anyway, i have disassembled the T30 completely and then the idea came. what if the tea is under one of those sticky labels? so now, after another cleaning, i'm waiting to get it dry. i will wait at least for 24 hours, as you advised me and then, i will inform you about the result. if you have any other ideas, let me know. thanks again.
