Have you upgraded to 2x 256MB RAM as suggested earlier?

Not yet I haven't had the chance to do it.

Not even sure what boards to buy I know it has 256mb already

the original ibm part number is: 33L3069. it is pc100 memory in sodimm format. you *may* be able to use a pc133 sodimm, but i don't know that for certain so someone else will need to confirm.

adding the extra ram will help xp to swap-to-disk less, in turn that will help to reduce the heat you're feeling. the hard disk is under your left wrist in the t22. and, it will speed up the system overall.

left upper corner is where the cpu assembly resides. under the left palm rest is the hdd. in between is the pcmcia bay.

What is the exact TYPE of your laptop?
On the bottom is a big IBM label. It has a 7-character code, followed by the serial number.
It looks like TYPE 2647-4CS

It may have had a smaller CPU originally, and they did not put in the larger CPU fan when they souped up the CPU.
I'd still say your T22 is overheating at the CPU.
Take the keyboard off and show us a picture of the CPU cooler.

the max cpu in the t22 was a 1ghz, i believe. the fan unit was different for the 900 vs 1000?

when i had temperature issues with my 1ghz t22, it was determined to be related to hdd heat production. the original 32gb hdd in it was 12.7mm height, which left no room above the drive for airflow. a design flaw, imho. after the hdd began to fail, i replaced it with a newer, 9.5mm drive and that little 3mm of empty space above the drive was plenty to maintain a much better cooling airflow. the machine is now my mother's and we've never had issues since.

i wonder if the op's 20gb hdd is the original and if it's a 12.7mm unit. and if so, if that is contributing to his heat issue.

without knowing whether your hdd is 12.7mm height, i wouldn't discount the fan and dust accumulation, as RBS mentioned, as sources of extra heat. i consider opening up my t'pads twice a year to check things out just part of regular maintenance. all pcs get dusty inside, but it's more problematic in laptops just because there's far less room for airflow to begin with.

just so you know, a pretty good job of dust-cleanout can be done with only the keyboard removed. have a look at the hmm link i posted if you want to see how to remove the keyboard. it's pretty simple.

I ran the original 20GB HD in my T22 for 5 months before upgrading to an 80GB and it never once got really hot, not above 60c at least. It is good the fan area is being cleaned, you never know about the previous conditions of use sometimes.

your 80gb was a 9.5mm drive, right? that 3mm makes a big difference.

60*C is ok for the cpu, but most hdd's specify less for the operating range. i'm sure that heat played a major role in the premature failure of my 32gb hdd.

Well, I was actually speaking about my original 20GB HD that came stock in the T22, I ran that for many months doing video editing and the HD would get up to 57-58c, until the fan kicked in and brought it down.
