Aoto power adapter for T23

#1 Post by winslow » Tue Aug 12, 2008 2:51 am

Does the auto adapter require a driver? I recently picked one up but it doesnt seem to be recognized y the computer. The battery runs down when I have it plugged in and when I turn off the computer with the auto power plugged in the power light does not illuminate?

Nope, no software driver is needed. Assuming that a regular AC adapter powers the system and charges the battery, then the problem would be with the auto adapter or the cigarette lighter. Insert the car's cigarette lighter plug for a few seconds and see if it get warm. If it doesn't, either the ignition has to be "on" or in the "accessories" position or the car's fuse is bad. If the lighter outlet is good, then check the fuse inside the plug of the DC adapter. The metal tip should screw off providing access to the fuse inside. If that fuse is good, then what's left is a problem with the DC adapter (bad circuit inside or a broken wire).

plugged it into the dc accesory outlet. The light on the charger comes on but it doesn't charge or power the computer. Took the tip off but couldn't locate a fuse in there anywhere, just the springloaded tip. Is there supposed to be a fuse under the piston?

I bought an auto adapter for an ipod and it would not power the player. I called the manufacturer and she said to check the fuse; it was a bit tricky to get to, but sure enough the fuse was cracked. It took a standard small auto accessory fuse and now it works fine.

Sorry, but it appears I was mistaken about the spring-loaded fuse. Just checked a couple of my DC adapters and they have a solid pin, not a fuse that I thought was in there.

If the adapter's LED is lighting up when you plug it in, then that means your car's lighter outlet and adapter's DC input cord are working properly. That leaves the adapter itself or the DC output cord. If you can grab a voltmeter and measure the yellow tip (one meter lead placed inside the open hole at the end of the plug and the other meter lead held against the metal on the outside of the plug), there should be ~16.5V DC.

It appears that if the vehicle is running and the auto adapter is then plugged in before I power up the laptop then the auto adapter works, although it still indicates it is running under battery. If the battery has discharged it will charge, and when it is carged it will indicate about 5000 hrs of battery use available. I just received the auto adapter for my G41 so I'll see if that has the same characteristics. Seems strange to me.
