T21 CPU upgrade

#1 Post by Shoey Peachew » Sun Aug 31, 2008 10:31 am

Hi,

I bought a 1.0ghz/512mb T22 off of eBay for $120 a few months ago, but when I received it, it had a power issue where it kept powering on and off automatically at the bios screen until eventually I got a crc error. I decided to buy a MB off of eBay and it turned out to be a T21 and I upgraded to the latest bios, swapped 1.0ghz cpu and better heatsink from my t22 and everything worked well. Unfortunately, I noticed my 1.0ghz Thinkpad does struggle somewhat when I play back embedded Adobe flash player videos on websites and I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade to a mobile PIII 1.2ghz 133/bus I got off eBay for $10.99. I figured it was cheap enough to give it a shot, but then I did a quick google search and noticed someone mention on this website that it won't work. Anyway, I made an account here to ask if it's possible to use the 1.2ghz cpu with my T21 motherboard?

Thanks

Edit: NVM, I downloaded CPU-Z and now I see the bus speed on my T21 is only 100mhz. I guess I'll upgrade the cpu in my friends Dell Inspiron 8100 instead.

The T20-T22 series can only go up to 1Ghz Coppermine using the FC-PGA package.

The 1.13 and 1.2Ghz Tualatin processors use the larger FC-PGA2.

You can tell these two apart visually as follows:

1. FC-PGA has full pin array with no void area in the middle with out pins. FC-PGA2 has a void in the middle.
2. FC-PGA essentially is a BGA mounted on a PGA substrate. So it is a two layer package.

P.S. Edited, thank you, RBS, T23 are different.

No, it won't work.
The T20/21/22 take a 495-pin PIII CPU.
These come as: 650, 700, 750, 800, 850, 900MHZ and 1.0GHz.

The T23 takes a 478-pin PIII CPU.
Available as 866MHz and 1.00, 1.13, 1.20GHz.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
