T23 hard drive question (new kid in town)

#1 Post by mig82 » Fri Sep 26, 2008 3:09 am

Hello everybody!

I got a T23 - 2647, it came originally with w2000, but i upgraded to XP professional about a year ago. My hard drive died on me unfortunately (and after 2 totally-accidental drops). I ve been reading around the posts in here, and though I have gathered much needed info, I am unsure as to what kind of hard drive to get for my notebook.
The best price I found is at my school's computer shop: a 120GB Seagate Momentus, 5400 rpm, 8MB, ATA-100 for CA$75. Would this be ok? I mean, i know there are the SATA drives, that i know is newer stuff but that wont work on my laptop.
Any suggestions or comments are welcomed, and thanks in advance any replies!

Welcome to the forum. That drive will work fine, in fact any 2.5" IDE (ATA) laptop hard drive will work in a T23.

I replaced my failed 30GB with a 120GB Wester Digital WD1200BEVE and all worked perfectly.

I believe I paid something in the vicinity of US$ 70.00 shipped (Amazon.com).

Hello,

The Seagate Momentus are fast drives, but can be noisy.
The 250 GB WD Scorpio is very silent, and almost as fast as ancient 7200 rpm disks (I'll buy a 80 GB one for my new T42 today).
I would also recommend the Samsung disks, very silent too. I have one in my T23, and I am very satisfied with it. Samsung disks are cheap.
Hitachi Travelstar are good ones. Not the best, but very balanced.

Hello!

I have some problems with my T23.

It can reboot itself or hang. Several days ago I noticed the high-pitched whining produced by the hard drive. In addition the hard drive produces annoying crackling loud sound. I suppose that the hard drive will die soon. I am right or there can be other reasons for hang and reboot?

Hard drive: IC25T060ATCS05-0 40Gb

hope for your help!

Kugive there are lots of freeware programs that can tell you what condition your hard drive is in, google "freeware smart hard drive". They're great for extra peace of mind, and saved me from losing all my files (on a desktop pc) a few years ago.

warmachine could you post what model of samsung hd you're using? I've been meaning to get a bigger HD and for me noise is the most important factor.

doctor bloomquist, I'm afraid it is too late.

Today my device has ceased to turn on. I press the power button - all indicators, except the indicator of the hard drive light up for a moment. Then nothing occurs. Periodic noise of the fan is audible only. There are no other sounds, nothing is being displayed. Is it the hard drive or something more serious?

I turned on my notebook again and let the fan “to pulse” for about 10 seconds. It started!!! But message “Fan error” appeared. It was working on battery. Then I connected it via AC adapter to electric network and powered on again. It started and system (Win XP) loaded. I’m afraid that it will hang again after several hours, but in any event it’s working now.

Could you advise me some software which can strictly detect issues of my notebook?

I’ve tested my HDD with HDDScan v.3.1. S.M.A.R.T. test is OK, except #191 G-sense error rate.

I've gotten some good deals on ebaY. The hard drive slides in and out very easily and with a good program like Acronis TrueImage you can copy your complete drive data from one to another and boot up without having to reinstall your OSs.

But it works great. I didnt/dont have any issue with noise regarding the Seagate Momentus drive that I got. *knocking on wood*
Thanks to everyone
