Wireless PCI with WPA2 sought for T23

#1 Post by thinkaholic » Fri Oct 24, 2008 9:23 pm

Hi:

I am setting up a T23 with built-in wifi, but the card is only compatible with WEP encryption. I am unconcerned with speed, "b" is plenty fast enough for what I do, but I need the realistic encryption capability.

Is there a list of compatible mini-PCI cards available that will meet this criterion (WPA2 capability)?

TIA

Off the top of my head, the list is probably much longer:

Intel 2200BG, Intel 2915 ABG

Broadcom 4306 (b/g), Broadcom 4309 (a/b/g).

Hope this helps.

Thanks George!

One more N00b question:

Would the 4306 from a Dell work on the T-23? Or would there be minor issues as with the 2200?

I believe that most any BCM94306 or BCM94309 wireless card (be it from Dell, HP, Gateway, or whoever), will work inside the T23. Just last night I installed a 309 card in a T23, used a Broadcom driver (3.30.15.0) I downloaded from Gateway and everything seems to be working properly. Well, at least for 802.11b and 11g networks; haven't tried connecting to an 802.11a network.

I've plugged various Broadcom cards into the T23 and have never had a problem with it being recognized. I don't think that there's anything in the BIOS which will prevent you from using them. But then again, most of my systems are also not running the latest BIOS version.

My 2 cents worth:
You may be over thinking the encryption
My subdivision has just 40 houses in it, of the 18 or so WAPs running near by my 5 and 1 other are encrypted, all of the rest are wide open.
WEP, WPA or WPA2 is enough deterrent to stop 99.9% of the morons out there, when 12 others are wide open.
Like i said, for what it is worth

Thanks for the input Ron...and I'm not any sort of expert. But my Daddy always said: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." I've survived two identity theft instances, and I want to do my best to avoid someone accessing my tax or banking records. The extra layer of security provided by the stronger encryption will make me feel a little safer. Besides, changing out the mini PCI will probably be faster than changing the settings on a router, 6 computers and 4 phones!

Greg,

if it helps, I installed in my "wi-filess" T23 an Intel 2200BG recovered from a Compaq. No issues here; with the latest BIOS the T23 recognized the card and it is "happy"...

Im not saying dont use encryption,

What Im saying is any encryption is better than the novices out there running nothing at all.
2 years ago if I needed a quick fix while traveling, I headed for the local Motel Parking lot, Now I look for coffee shops.
Same thing as most "War Drivers" do these days.
On one 3 mile stretch of I-85 near my home has almost 300 WAPs. 100 of them are wide open. You tell me who is going to be used?

Following the advice of my ThinkGurus I purchased a BCM94306MPLNA on FleaBay (since nothing was currently available in the Marketplace). I installed with the Gateway driver, only to face the dreaded code 10 error. I tried the Dell driver with the same results. I then tried an HP driver, which worked, but only provided WPA-PSK encryption. Since I was on a roll, I tried a newer HP driver:

HP Compaq Broadcom WLAN Network Adapters Driver

Or, to make a long story short:

http://tinyurl.com/5wkufn

It worked right out of the box with WPA2 support.

Thanks again to you guys!!
