Display Problems other issues w T23 thinkpad, need help

#1 Post by smith07031 » Wed Oct 29, 2008 5:28 pm

My friend bought a t23 for 20.00, gave it to me to fix it. When you turn it on w battery or ac, there is no display at all(there was a faint brightness when I first got it like backlight? but now no display at all. In addition, the fan goes on immediately from a fast speed to a slower one constantly changing every second. I tried removing keyboard and reseating video plug into board, but same problem/symptoms. No audio of course too, and I can't see to get into bios.
By the way, was I supposed to remove hard drive to remove keyboard? Thought I saw this in ibm movie?
Anyone who has insight or experience on this or similar symptoms / thinkpads, please post your advice. Thank you.
(there is a box w + sign in it in the rt hinge cover when I boot it up w the fan going from slow to fast, fluctating; in the middle panel of lcds,
all leds light up for a split second then the one second to last on the rt looks like a 'z' letter in it on a angle is steady and lit up.

After reading this post, go back to the T2x/T3x index page and look at the top of the page for the thread named "Sticky: Pulsing Fan on a Dead T23? Check the inductors...". Your answers will be found inside.

Did not mean to step on the big birds toesies.

Ron

Admin comment: My toesies are fine. Just be careful not to be under wherever I perch  :) .

So you are saying I have to resolder a choke which looks like something like a resistor to the board? (will have to look at those pics again)
Thanks again if you are certain that is the culprit/ cause of problem; if I use external monitor will have same symptoms, correct?

Inductor is about 1/2" square and located on the bottom side of the motherboard. Extraction requires removal of everything except the lid assembly. Keep all of the various screws grouped by whatever piece (FRU) it goes with. Be sure to download a copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4UYM3F

The loose inductor basically causes a general power problem and nothing will appear on the LCD or the external video port. The surging fan is the one key symptom which identifies this type of problem.

The choke is a start
Get the machine running correctly then sort out the LCD.

Side note
I have owned several smaller birds, and cared for a doctors larger birds
NO THANK YOU!

Ron
