Can I put a HD w/OS from a T23 into a T22 and it work?

#1 Post by braxx » Wed Oct 29, 2008 8:50 pm

I bought a T22 and wouldn't you know it. The 3rd or 4th time I fired it up the HD failed. I've tried putting it ( HD ) in the freezer and that didn't work. I tried it in an external case and it still won't spin. SO, I'm about to pick up a T23 that has a 30gb HD with a factory loaded OS. Can I pull it out of the T23 and intall it in the T22 and have it work correctly? I mean at least boot and operate enough to let me work around and get additional drivers if needed?
Both computers have XP pro.
Thanks,
Josh

EDIT: 11-18-08
Ok, so the working hd from the T23 would not boot the T22. I got a blue screen. I didn't wan't to mess around with trying to figure it out so I just reformatted it and used my T23 recovery disk's. That caused a few issues. 1) When powered on I would get a black screen that asked if I wanted to start "Windows Xp" or "Windows".
2) After the black screen I would get a light blue screen that said something about a disk check if I didn't press any key with in 10sec.
Disk check took forever and then booted into XP just fine. Power down with restart and every thing started again, black screen, blue screen w/ disk check etc... Power down , same thing again.
I was feed up. Reformatted again and loaded a generic XP Pro on it and all is perfect.
Put a new 60gb HD into the T23 that I took the HD from. Installed XP pro from the T23 recovery disks and all went perfect.
So , the T23 HD ( With XP Pro ) would not boot a T22 even with a fresh recovery from T23 disks.
Thanks,
Josh

It should work without any hiccups.
But if you can find a hard disk cheap(er than buying a whole T23), you could also get a set of T2x Factory Restore CDs with XP-Pro and install that.

Thank you for the fast reply.
I do have a new 60gb HD but I can get this T23 for a good price. I want to give the T22 to my cousin and then I can keep the T23.
Hmmm.. I think I have a set of T23 XP restore cd's.
I'll have to check.

I used a Win2000 t23 restore disk on my t22 and had to replace the video driver. I imagine you'll need to do the same. The driver is available on Lenovo's web site.

ED: With Win XP that may not be needed.

As far I know you can not run WindowsXP installed on a T23 on a T20/21/22.

The system will crash and you have re-install all software from start.

You can swap HD's with Xp installed on a T23 with a T30 machine and vv. The video driver needs to be reinstalled.

I just did this very thing (almost). I built an XP image (with restore disks) on a T22 for my moms T23 with the intention of swapping the hard drive.

No go, at least at first. At boot, it kicked out a blue screen 0x00007B error and wouldn't boot in the T23. Fixed that by following the directions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082/. But still the hardware from the T22 show up (serial ports, etc), which confound the OS.

I finally got the whole thing to run (loaded NET 2.0 and the TP update tool), but no matter what I did, I could not get the OS to recognize the right ports on the T23 (recall the install was on the T22). I had to send the T23 back to her because of work obligations, so I'll not have another chance to mess with it for a while. I stuck the original drive with Win2k back in it before sending it off.

If you figure it out, let us all know! I got it 95% of the way there, but got stuck at the end (and needed the serial port for a Palm Pilot she swears by).

Good luck!

EDIT: and XP runs pretty well even on the T22 (900mHz) with 512MB memory. Not quick, but stable. I'm going to leave XP as an alternative to the Ubuntu that is on there primarily.
