Thinkpad T21 Display Drivers 1280x possible??

#1 Post by MikeTheGoalie » Tue Nov 11, 2008 9:44 am

Hello Everyone,

I've rebuilt an older T21 IBM Thinkpad and wondering if anyone here might know if it is possbile to run 1280x1024 display mode?

I haven't been able to find a driver that will allow it..

Is it even possibe? If it is, doesn't anyone know where I can get this driver?

Thanks!

No you can't.
Max res is 1024x768.
There is an SXGA+ LCD panel with 1400x1050, but I've never seen that on a T20/T21/T22, only on the T23.

If that would work (someone else?), you'd also need the matching inverter and LCD-cable.

Ah, I guess that is why I can't find anything on that.

That really stinks! :)

Some T21s (850Mhz) and T22s (1Ghz) came with the SXGA+ (1400x1050) panel but nothing in SXGA. If you are talking about external resolution, then yes it might be possible. A regular XGA T22 that I have is able to set both 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 resolution on an external monitor. The XGA T21 system uses a slightly different video controller but according to the published specs, they are capable of up to 1600x1200 external resolution as well.

edit: Just tried an XGA T21... it does work for both 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 on my external monitor.

I am curious... If you play video at that resolution is it laggy?

I don't have the system with me right now, but after I get home from tonight's San Jose Sharks game, I'll give it a try. I think that there's a DVD player on it. However, now that I think of it, I'm not sure that I used an XGA T21 the other day. All of the T21s I have are SXGA+ except for one (a 2647-4AU), but I'll have to double-check that I pulled out the right one.

Sorry for the day delay... I double-checked that I was using the correct XGA T21. Using a Hitachi GD-S200 DVD drive and PowerDVD player, it does exhibit some very bad delays (like several dropped frames every second) with severe audio interruption in 1280x1024x32 bit full-screen mode playing a 4:3 DVD. The playback is fairly smooth when put into 16 bit mode at that resolution. Going to 1600x1200x16 bit resolution is just a little bit more laggy. CPU usage in 16 bit mode is about 50% and near 100% in 32 bit color mode. No other major programs (including antivirus) was running at the time. System memory was 512MB.

The short story: As long as you stay in 16 bit color mode, playback is acceptable (IMHO).

That is I thought the CPU + GPU for the T2x is too small for those resolutions.

Thanks Ray!
