T23: WiFi card trouble, WPA2.

#1 Post by upygiki » Sat Nov 29, 2008 5:51 pm

I have searched the forums and the consensus is that if one need to upgrade their wi-fi network card, then these are the choices:

Intel 2200BG, Intel 2915 ABG

Broadcom 4306 (b/g), Broadcom 4309 (a/b/g).

I have looked on ebay, and came away confused. The Intel 2200BG is there, but many auctions specifically state that its not to be used with IBM/Lenovo machines. Found the Broadcom 4306, and even though the auction specifically states that it works with T23, it also states that the card only comes with one antenna lead. The existing one in mine has two leads (main, aux).

Which one should I purchase?

I have several Broadcom BCM94306 and they all have 2 connectors.
Perhaps you get one extra antenna lead with that card?
It's not part of the card, it would be a bonus...

There are two cables coming from the computer, one named "main" and the other one "aux". Then there is a bigger blue plastic connector that goes in also. However, with the 4306 on ebay, it says in the auction description that the card only has one antenna connector. Will that still work? Do I connect the "main" or the "aux" to the one with only a solo connector?

The two coax cables with the metal caps at the end (U.FL connector) are for the wireless card. Most, if not all, MiniPCI WiFi cards should have two matching antenna jacks. If not, then you can plug either antenna lead into the card (main or aux doesn't really matter except your system may be "blind" to one side). I don't know off-hand which side is which lead...

The blue plastic connector is for the modem, of which you will lose when changing over to the Broadcom card.

edit: Do you have the eBay item number for that card? I'd be surprised if it's a BCM94306 card and it only has one antenna jack.

edit2: Is it 280289861701? If so, there's definitely two antenna jacks visible on the card but one of them may have been disabled. From what I can see, "Sagem" is printed on the label and as such, may be intended for overseas markets (as also evidenced by the eBay seller being located in the U.K.). If that's the one you're looking at, there's other cards from US sellers that's cheaper. Search for BCM94306MP* and you'll find them.

Here is a retail link to the 1 antenna 4306
Im not sure where they all came from...but the Geeks supplier had 5000 of them in stock the last time I checked.

1 other comment...on the Tpads below the T30, just about any wireless card will work, although there are exceptions. Above the T30 and including the T30 only IBM cars will work out of the box, there are hacks to the bios that will allow just about any of them to work. I am looking at the same hack for my T30 now

You picked a BCM4306 instead of a BCM94306
Guess that's the 1 connector difference.
I would not buy that, look instead for a 2-connector type!

Doh, I thought that 4306 was shorthand for 94306. Sorry.
