old hard drive in ultrabay hd adapter

#1 Post by flyonthewall » Mon Dec 01, 2008 3:25 pm

i have an old hard drive with wxp and some music and picture files on it. can i just pop it into an ultrabay hd adapter (thinking of picking one up) and drag and drop to my primary hd? will i need to set the jumper on the old one to slave?

thanks,
dustin

No jumpering is required (as long as it is not currently set for slave). Just pop it in and go.

One word of warning... booting a system that has two bootable hard drives installed at the same time could lead to one (or both) driver being un-bootable. This happened to me once before when cloning a system. I'm not sure if this problem is totally isolated to identical disk images or if might happen with any two bootable drives.

My suggestion would be to have backups of both drives before attempting this. Also, you might consider booting the system with just the main hard drive, ejecting the Ultrabay device (or having it removed while initially booting) and then installing the Ultrabay HD adapter containing the second drive "hot".
