replacing the motherboard on my T23

#1 Post by winslow » Fri Dec 05, 2008 1:39 am

Managed to get the old one out and the new one in and reassembled the entire computer. Now can I just fire it up? Seems to me I read somewhere that I need to run a diskette to reset the serial number or something of the like. Has anyone who has replaced their motherboard let me know if I need to do something before I fire it up and install the OS (I also purchased a new hard drive}. Any assistance from someone with experience is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Nope, just turn it on. The serial # is not required to power on the machine. In fact you could even install an OS without it. The first time you'd notice it was missing would probably be if you tried to run Thinkvantage System Update.

See this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=12263
Follow my (RealBlackStuff) instructions in that thread (about halfway down). It's the same for your T23.
The program can be located from the FTP link in the last post by Johan.

the OS loaded fine as you said it's just that the model and serial number in the bios don't match what's printed on the bottom of the machine. Is there any reason why I should change it to the old or does it even matter?

Reasons to change the numbers:

- system updates will work as they should, assuming that the serial numbers are drastically different models
- easier to re-sell the system if they match (it's up to you to reveal that the motherboard was replaced)
- if you have no intention on selling the system AND if you're the type that has to have everything perfect

Otherwise, I don't think it really matters.

I decided to go ahead and make the chane due to the fact that the existing number had windows 2000 as the OS when mine came with XP Pro. Didn't want that to be an issue later on somehow. Much easier to go ahead and do it now while I'm into the mode then tr later. Thanks for all the goodinfo. Somehow I always feel like my IQ is elevated by interacting with the people here.

happy to say everything has gone as well as hoped for. New motherboard, bigger hard drive, brand new battery and a brand new ultrabay battery. Feels like xmas already in my house.
