T23 Hard Drive or Motherboard Problem???

#1 Post by chr_mar » Mon Dec 15, 2008 4:59 pm

Hello

I have a problem with my T23. I got a T23 off eBay, it had SP2 with no Serisal Key. I used a SP3 CD to update and activate to laptop. Everything was working fine for a day or so,then the problem happend. After a while I get a loud clicking sound coming from the bottom left hand side of the laptop then it freezes or a blue screens appears saying there is NO Operating System found. When I restart it claims that there is no OS but if I wait a while, I assume until it cools down sometimes it starts ok. I also notice that its quite warm in the bottom left corner. Anyone know if thats where the hard disk is ? Any idea what the problem is?

Thanks, Chris

It could be the HD going south, what is the brand of the disk? YOu might run one of the HD diagnosis utilities to check it.

If the left corner gets hot, your CPU is overheating. The clicking noise could be made by one of the inductors, 'protesting' against the heat, or even the CPU itself.
Make sure there is thermal paste between CPU and cooler.

EDIT:
I re-read the post, and agree with the others, that this is a hard disk problem. (My initial too quick reading "saw" left top corner for some reason)

Download the T23 Hardware Maintenance Manual here:

Shows everything illustrated.

It sounds like the hard drive to me. You could pull it when its cold and boot from pc doctor diags or your xp cd and see if the clicking sound goes away. I am guessing it will and you need a new drive.
It is claiming the os is not found because the drive is not coming ready in time & the T23 does not see it.
The drive is held in by 1 screw under the palmrest, front left. Open thinkpad, set it on its side, slide cover - caddy- drive assembly out.

Thank for all the replies this forum is great. Pulled the hard drive and replaced it with another I just got from another T23 I ordered on eBay and its working great. Put the clicking drive in the other T23 and had the same problem, so I am pritty sertin it is the drive.
Just wondering is there any chance that there is a problem with the motherboard that made the hard drive break and might to it to the new one??

You might want to check how hot the original unit still
gets, running the working drive (you mentioned that as a
symptom originally).
