T30 - Invalid drive specification after...

#1 Post by robert213 » Fri Dec 19, 2008 2:51 pm

I used T30 Recovery CD's to install Windows XP Pro on my new Hitachi 7K100 HDD. Then, I used Norton's Partition Magic 8.0 to build a "D:" drive to keep my user data seperate from my program and system files. After I was happy with my install, I used Acronis True Image Home 11 to preserve a copy on a second new 7K100 HDD.

During this process, I created several DOS bootable Start-up diskettes...
1) Windows 98 Standard
2) Windows 98 Second Edition
ver - "Windows 98 V4.10.2222
3) Windoes XP Pro
ver - "Windows Millenium V4.90.3000"

All of the above was done two years ago.

This afternoon, I decided to try to use DOS Scandisk to check HDD for errors. Since my DOS Prompt window ([Start][Run]"command.com) locks up when using DOS Scandisk, I decided to start my T30 using each of my startup diskettes.

I have placed my 1.44 MB diskette drive in the Ultra-bay of my T30.

Whenever I enter "C:" or "D:", I receive "Invalid drive specification" error message.

I can access both "C:" and "D:" in Win XP Pro using DOS Prompt window.

I can access fixed disk drive number "1" using FDISK and Partition Magic.

However, I can't access my HDD files.

Any thoughts???

Those boot floppies all expect FAT32 partitions, and most likely they are in NTFS, which DOS can not read.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I just used Partition Magic to see all of the drives on my Win 98 SE Desktop machine. Yes, all of its drives are either FAT16 or FAT32.

I forgot that NTFS replaced FAT32.

I guess that I expected that the DOS startup diskette that I created using Win XP...

right-click,[Format...][Create an MS-DOS startup disk]

to be able to access NTFS files.
