error message when running recovery CD fot T30

#1 Post by winslow » Mon Dec 29, 2008 12:29 am

Am in the process of installing a new hard drive. When I start the system up it says ECHO is off. It seems to me when I recovered my T23's the Bios was shadowed. After I make the recovery partition choices it stops because of an "unrecoverable internal error 09 error code 016C ". Is this because the cd isn't properly reading the disk or maybe something to do with the Echo not being shadowed. If so how do I get the machine to shadow the BIOS? thanks in advance.

ECHO has nothing to do with BIOS.
It's a command to either show or not show what is happening in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT during boot.
ECHO ON means: display stuff
ECHO OFF means: don't display stuff.

If it's your own TP, I wouldn't bother with the Restore Partition, and install Windows straight away.
It's a waste of space as far as I'm concerned.

would flashing the BIOS help fix the error code? Could a corrupted BIOS cause the mentioned error code?

Hopefully I have inadvertantly overcome my problem. I tried running the recovery cd in another cd drive in the ultrabay and the system is running. Apparantly it had an issue with the first two drives I tried.

I'm also getting this "ECHO is off" message when I try to run the recovery cds.

Anyone know a fix besides trying to run it on another cd drive?

the echo off seems to have nothing to do with the problem. Unfortunately you cannot run it from an external cd dreive, I tried that also. Are you using factory restore disks or copies?

You have a T30 also? While researching my problem I discovered there are a number of things that can lead to erro codes. How much RAM do you have installed? Do you have aRam in both modules? If not try switching modules. I know it sounds crazy but it seems that has been an issue for some people. May as well try even the craziest of ideas before you invest money in more hardware. What was the issue that led to using restore disks, are you changing hard drives?

Yeah I have a T30 also. I have 2GB of RAM (2-1GB sticks). I'll try playing around with my memory and see if going with less works. I was having issues with it crashing, so I wiped the hard drive completely clean for a fresh install with factory cds (Travelstar 60gb 7200rpm hd).

It takes patience to work through the issues. So far I have broiught 4 T23's and 1 T30 back from the dead. Was planning on taking a break but today my G41 went down hard (I'll be spending some time in the Gx section. Good luck, there are a lot of helpfull people on this forum so with patience you'll succeed

I've rebuilt a few old Compaq laptops for my relatives so I know what a pain in the butt it can be until you get them up and running again. :banghead:

Trying different memory combinations (also have 2 sticks of 512mb) didn't work. I might see tomorrow if I'm able to revert back to the earlier version of BIOS to see if that might help.

I'm open to any other feedback or tips others have! :help:

@goalie...
You could have a duff CD/DVD drive.
Take it out and reseat it.
Clean the lens and the CD if necessary.

Unfortunately, cleaning the lens & contacts and reseating the cd and drive didn't correct the problem.

Bought a 6x Dvd drive on ebay for $5 and it ran the disks fine. I've since have been able to update the firmware version of my cd-rw drive so maybe that will correct any future issues (lets hope!)

I have a new question for you all. Now that I have everything loaded, I wanted to run IBM Rapid Restore PC (version 2.0) to make my recovery partition. It prompts me to "Insert a Windows 98 Emergency Diskette that is licensed for this computer into drive A. IBM Rapid Restore PC will copy files from the diskette to your hard drive."

I don't have the emergency diskette (only the 3-pack of Product Recovery Cds I bought). Is there a way to get my laptop partition made without having the emergency diskette? :help:

Don't waste your time and energy on a restore partition.
Instead get a free copy of Acronis TrueImage while you still can...

Take an image and burn that onto CD/DVD or external HD or big USB stick instead.

So I have to get a copy of a British computer magazine to be able to get the program disk?

I did all the registration and got a serial number. Where is the actual link to download the program?

I ended up installed Rescue and Recovery Ver. 4.2 so that should handle my rescue partition needs (along with backing up files to a jump drive or cd).
