t30 to t30 hard drive swap

#1 Post by tennjed » Wed Dec 31, 2008 6:25 pm

I sure am glad I found this site. this is my first post.

I have a t30 (2366-85U) that has develpoped a noisy fan problem. Additionally, it suffers from having in bad memory slot.

After looking at the price of repair parts, most of which are refurbished or used, and the fairly reasonable cost of refurbished computers on ebay, I have decided that the best way to go is to buy a refurbished t30. I hope to just remove the hard drive from my current t30 and install it in the new unit. Am I likely to run into problems with this idea? Does the new unit have to be a (2366-85U) model?

My understanding is you wont have issues
Keeping mind your wireless card may also need to be swapped
On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being no issues
Probably a 9.9

If you are running Windows that you've upgraded you'll have to reactivate it with Microsoft. I just went through this, my original T23 came with Windows 2000. I bought the upgrade edition of XP pro which I ran In my 2647 2TU till It croked & I got a 2647 4nu replacement. The New T23 has the built in wireless antennas which I've always wanted. When I moved the hard disk the screen anounced that I had made "significant hardware changes" since windows was activated and I must reactivate. Royal PITA & I paid $130 for the 'upgrade'. Also My Norton anti virus wanted reactivation So I uninstalled it and installed AVG free edition instead, saving about 2GB of disk space.

If tennjed is running an IBM OEM version of WinXP,(i.e. factory install or from the restore/recovery disks) he should be able to swap with no issues other than Windows trundling along upon first start-up and identifying any hardware differences it finds and installing the drivers.

I swap an OEM hard disk between 3 different A31-series machines, sometimes either daily or weekly, and have yet to encounter any activation issues. The machines are different types (2652, 2653, 2 x A31p, 1 x A31) with totally different configurations, and every time Windows just identifies any hardware change and proceeds along as if nothing has changed.

Regards.
