T30 - No Keyboard POST?

#1 Post by Harryc » Tue Jan 06, 2009 3:51 pm

I just got in a T30 with no keyboard that won't POST in a dock. Will a T30 POST and boot while docked with no keyboard installed? Does the LCD produce a normal display?

It should work, provided the motherboard is OK ( and at least the VGA Out also works).

Well, here's the thing. It does not POST without a keyboard in a dock. I also hooked up an external LCD to the dock and still get no display. I removed all RAM and I get a 1-3-3-1 beep code sequence, so that tells me that at least part of the systemboard function works. With RAM installed I get no beeps, but again no post. I also removed the modem, and it has no mPCI card, same results. Any ideas?

Edit: I forgot to mention that all 4 LEDs flash on power up normally, and the power LED and battery LED remain on, also normal. The battery appears to be charging (flashing green LED).

Try another CPU if you have that.
I just put one of my T30s without a keyboard on a port replicator (P/N 02K8668/FRU 08N1536) and it boots up (or beeps without RAM).

Thanks for pulling out the T30/dock and testing this. OK I'll take a look at the CPU.

Edit: For some reason, I actually have an Intel Pentium 4-M Mobile 1.7 GHz 512/400 CPU SL6FG on hand, so I'll try it. The original is a 1.8Ghz CPU.

Swapped in a new CPU, same problem. I have the same dock, 02K8668.

Being a memory guy, I've got to ask :) . Are you sure that the PC2100 (or faster) modules are okay?

Hi Ray, they're both tested IBM FRU's. One is FRU 10K0031, Mosel Vitelic, the other is FRU 10k0031, Infineon. I just swapped them around a bit, and I got the machine to POST with the Mosel Vitelic (256MB PC2100) in slot 1, nothing in slot 2. So, I'm scratching my head here ... Two bad slots? One bad slot?

Hmm... don't know whether to respond to this or not... could be considered a conflict of interest. I'm an employee of Mosel Vitelic :) . We also had a joint venture with Infineon (ProMOS) which eventually they dropped out of. That resulted in ProMOS swallowing us. Anyway, back to the matter at hand...

I'd say if the 256MB MV module works in one slot and not the other, then you have the infamous memory slot issue. If the Infineon module does not work in either slot, then it's, a) defective (actual bits are bad), b) mis-configured (bad setup information in the on-board SPD or EEPROM or 3) both slots are bad. But you say they're both "tested"? By that you mean they're both error-free (e.g., memtest86+) in another system? If so, then maybe you have two bad slots but the MV module is working just enough or the slot that it's in when it does work is mostly good. I guess after all of this exposition, I'd have to say that you have two bad memory slots if both of those modules are good in another system. As a final try, you could try cleaning the gold traces on the modules and see if that helps any, but I wouldn't be too optimistic.

Harry,

I've got a working T30 keyboard missing a key somewhere, I'll send it to you with the rest of X41 stuff on Thursday...

Well, the MV 256MB PC2100 stick works in both slots. The good news is that the slots are good, the bad news is I have to find new PC2700 for this machine ;). Thanks for the leg up gentlemen.
