CD Restore on a T23

#1 Post by jronald » Sat Jan 10, 2009 4:28 pm

OK
Have a new HDD that is driving me nuts
Slapped in the new HDD and put the system restore disk 1 in (4 times total)
The first, third and forth time, it never asked for the 2nd disk
BUT
Wants me to activate windows!

The 2nd time it did ask me to put in the 2nd disk, but it kept the programs I installed on the first go around before I decided to dump it

What am I missing?

Ron

For the record, when using IBM Recovery Disks, you almost always have to format the hard drive first. I have sent out many different recovery disks for different models, and about 30% of the people PM me and tell me that the disks didn't work. I explain that you need to format first....then they reply that it worked. I have gotten to the point now, that I pretty much warn everyone right from the start that you need to format first.

I know that your issue was solved, but thought that I would add this note for anyone that might read through this with the same problem.

And an additional note... I generally run the "full erase" utility that's built into PC Doctor, but only for about 10% of the disk. I'm guessing that it's enough to wipe out the partition table and/or boot sectors which is enough for the recovery disks to think it's a blank drive.

NOTE: All links to PC-Doctor software hosted by me are dead. Files removed 8/28/12 by manufacturer's demand.

In my case it was an UNformatted disk that did the trick.
Im betting it was a screwy MBR that was causing the headache.
Once I forced it to recreate a new MBR, everything was fine.

Still just a guess
